Turbo Advice, bought modded 8 (pics)

I bought a modified Rx8, just waiting on it to arrive. I wanted one to play around with, and see what kinda HP I could get out of it. Been a fan of the rotaries for a while, just never owned one. I bought this one, and obviously the turbo is missing. Unsure of any engine damage, car was repo'd so the owner snagged the booster apparently. Figured you guys could tell me about any of the mods you see done, and that will help lead me in the right direction. What turbo would be a good choice for it? Any idea on brand of kit on it? Anywho, post up your thoughts...or anything you may can tell me what is done to it. Thanks guys.

Dont know, havent been within 2,000 miles of it. I am guessing it may need engine work, dunno why else the turbo would be missing...unless they knew it was being repo'd. The turbo could have been stolen at some point, but I tried to guess the worse case scenerio when buying it.

Is the intake aftermarket? Does a stocker have injectors there? Any idea what the red box is in the upper left?

If the owner couldn't make the car payments there is a good chance he also couldn't afford to properly install the turbo & maintain this car also. You should expect the worse and have enough money on hand to drop in a new motor. Where are you located, you need access to a tuner shop that works on rotaries, a dealer will not be any help.

Thats a possibility for sure. If the engine is bad, thats perfectly fine...would prefer it to be showroom fresh...but I dont expect that since its partially disassembled. I have no problem rebuilding it, or swapping it. I have built several 500-700hp street cars, tuned different aftermarket fuel injection systems on boosted strokers, etc. Just never owned a rotary, not hadicapped. When the car arrives, then I can tell if the engine is bad....till then, not too worried about it. 10K miles on the car. I figured some of you guys may have researched all of the upgrades for the car and had a good headstart on me, so figured you could lead me in the right direction. I have a full CNC mill at the house, so I could machine the whole engine out of billet aluminum if I felt the need (which I dont), so I am not some idiot wanting to be Vin diesel's co-pilot.

the intake doesn't look factory--I wish it was a bigger picture and some different angles to know what the other parts in there are....interesting--keep us posted on what you discover when you get it

yea, thats the only pic I have, will post more when I get it here. Should be interesting. I am guessing the larger braided line with the AN fittings are for oil? Not sure. I see the fuel regulator, fuel rail, injectors, intake, at least one pulley on the alternator, and the red box.

the tubes looks funny to me....like it's not done right--really looks like someone slapped it together. The tubes look different diameters which can't be good for performance. I don't see a BOV or where the MAF sensor is either. I'm guessing this guy blew up his motor and took off the turbo to sell it and said f this and had it repo'd.

edit: battery missing too, unless it's relocated to the trunk or something

I looked at that also, but I dont think thats the case from what I can tell. Who would take the time to keep a $100 turbo.... But stranger things have happend. I dont like the different sizes either, but thats an easy fix. Without seeing other angles, its hard to guess whats there and whats not. Either way it should be a fun project, if everything goes too far wrong, I will have the first Rx8 power by a small block chevy, lol.

Yea, saw the missing battery also, not too strange to see that though. All the parts could be in the trunk, just never know.

Looks really interesting.
Expect the worst, but I look forward to your discoveries once you take delivery.
I don't recognize the "kit", but that doesn't mean anything in particular.

Lots of "foreign" parts in there (and a lot of stuff missing, too).

yep, my thoughts exactly. I figured with this one, I wouldnt have a problem really getting wild with the mods if I wanted to, or go back completely stock with a new engine and still be in it cheaper than buying an average one. Or maybe even throw a 3 rotor in it, who knows.

The red box looks like a relocated light weight battery.

I dont have turbo but.

it seems like a "pretty custom" kit that, the previous owner probably gave up cuz he messed it up so much. tons of stuff were missing.

so yep, prepare for the worst.

Not really a helpful post....we have established to prepare for the worst. Got it.

If you havent seen an Rx8 without the plastic engine covers, you are probably not gunna be much help here. Im not looking to repair it in one day, and not looking for an opinion from someone who considers a cold air intake major engine work. (for future posters, not directed at anyone in particular) I have no problem rebuilding the engine, porting it, buying a turbo, building custom exhaust, machining custom intake, vacuum forming carbon fiber, fixing any issues there, etc. But anyone that can shed some light on anything they see, it would be greatly appreciated. I deal with high performance EVERYTHING, but not familiar with all the tricks of rotaries yet. So if you see something done, feel free to post it up. Or if you see something missing, and actually know what it is, feel free to post that up also. Dont need to hear "wow, alot is not there", or "wow, alot of work", or anything else thats obvious to all of us.

BTW, the car being repo's was a guess.....owner may have died, car may have been stolen, etc.

i am looking forward to seeing some more pictures... custom fuel system (havent seen many people using fpr), i think that red box may be a haltech unit (a guess), interesting oil filter relocation, no real signs of a tb (am i missing it?), rerouted water lines... someone did a lot of work on it whether it works or not. turbo wise i am not sure what to recommend. Its interesting bro I am curious to see the rest of the car. I have a feeling you have a an aftermarket fuel pump which could prove to be interesting...

Sweet, thats what Im talkin bout. It is a Haltech unit going by the pictures...

Thanks bro, now I can do a little research on it.

Also, it looks like the a/c compressor is missing, can anyone tell? I have never seen a good picture of one on an engine.

Kind of hard to tell from the pics because of where the water pump and the ac compressor sits they could be missing. The ac compressor is behind all the piping in that pic. I can't imagine those missing. My guess is this car was in it's stages of boost and never finished. All though every turbo installer knows you start with the turbo first then go to the piping. But since the turbo is missing and piping pictured, i'm lost.

Turbo manifold is setup for a divided hotside, don't think any of the kits out there have that feature. And the air pump appears to be missing - but if not worried about emmissions that's not a big deal.

I think the PowerMod, out of Australia is based on Haltech...

edit: as far as what turbos you can use up there, as large as a 60-1 will fit up front with relative ease - if that turbo manifold is in working condition

yea, no worries about emissions here....

Any benifits of the hot side being divided? I have never researched it honestly.
