Hi guys, i've been looking around but i haven't seen anything about dealerships not doing the recall because of aftermarket parts. i was juss wondering, did anyone else have the same problem wit the dealers not doing the recall? If anyone knows a dealership in southern california that will actually do this recall wit my test pipe on, will anyone let me know which one? thnx

part of the recall involves checking the cat - didn't that cross your mind when you brought your car in?

whats stoping them from doing the rest of the recall procedures? they have an obligation to check FACTORY CATs but none whatsoever to check aftermarket pieces/ catless mid pipes.

but they are still LEGALLY obligated to do the rest of the recall procedures. first contact the mazda 800 number and then contact the NHSTA

Agreed. A recall is not a warranty issue, so your lack of cat should not affect it.

I went to a dealership today and flat out told them I had no cat. The service manager's response was "Well that'll save us some time then!"

They didn't seem to care, I mean **** it's less work for them.

damn wtf? its the browning mazda dealership in socal. they pissed me off. becaues wen i made the reservation to take my car in i told them that i had no cat. they said it'll be fine and they'll juss do the rest of my recall. but wen i actually took it there and dropped off my car the whole day, they called me and told me they didn't do the recall due to my test pipe. i was fighting with them that they should still do the rest except checking the cat but they said they called mazda and mazda said not to. Do you guys know any other good mazda dealerships in socal? cuz brownin mazda is ****.

Don't try Star Mazda either, I hear they aren't accomidating. Maybe give Galpin a go, thats my service department. The service maneger has an 8 with catback exhaust, suspension work, etc so he'd probably be cool with it.

That's BS...

They have to fix it by law.

Just take it to Surf City Mazda in HB off Beach Blvd. (Formerly Heritage)

they can also report you to CARB and the Feds; operating a car on the street with the cat converter removed is a federal offense subject to a possible $10,000 fine vehicle confiscation, and jail time. Don't make waves there, just take it to another dealership or reinstall the OE cat before taking it back.

I've been to Star Mazda (in Glendale), and had more than a "few" aftermarket parts on my car, and they still did the recall work.

Also, it may be the actual aftermarket part you have. A midpipe is very illegal in California. Might have brought up the whole CARB issue (though I have a hi-flow cat which isn't CARB approved either) like TeamRX8 had mentioned.

Exhaust shops can get into trouble for working on cars that don't have cats, and for all I know this would be true of a dealer too. If I ran an auto repair buisness I'd stay far away from cars that were in clear violation of a federal law, and I don't fault a dealer for doing the same.

yea i know i can juss take it off and put the normal one back on, but i dont want to go through the hassle of doing it. because i dont have the tools to do it, ima either have to take it to a shop to change my test pipe to my oem cat and then afterwards put it back on. so i guess ima juss try other dealers. thnx guys for all the help. i really appreciate.

Do you happen to know anyone there? I've already been turned away by them, they refused on account of the turbo...lame. I DID call the 800 number and they told me that if i were to take off the turbo and then take it back to the dealer that they could do the tests/recalls then. I asked if that means they would replace the engine if necessary, to which he replied YES. That's nice, but between the time to take the turbo off and then put it back on, I would be SUPER pissed if i didn't need the new engine, why the heck can't they just do the tests and then tell me? Can anyone make any sense of this? Or point me to who to talk to at Surf City or any other Dealer for that matter.

i have to agree with teamrx8 on this one.. you are fighting a loosing battle with a test pipe...

and if you are to lazy to change it back or not willing to pay to have it changed back... that is your choice and stop your bitching...

good luck..

beers

hahah i really wasn't trying to bitch. All i wanted was someone to point me to a dealership that will actually give me the recall without all the hassle. But if none of the dealers are willing to, i guess i'll juss have to change the oem cat back on.

hmm checking around i have to agree with the "change it back" folks now. they could actually get in trouble with the law for working on your vehicle with out the emissions device installed. so its either put it back on or or just not do the recall for now.
