So why is everyone waiting for Cobb if Racing Beat and Promaz can reflash the ecu?

I'm also assuming FI companies that use this and include an access port will have their own maps to download (like gruppe-s does with the subaru turbo upgrades)

Then to extract more power you can always refine the tune suited to your car, as they would most likely put a safe tune on.

Another great benefit of the Cobb AP (at least on Subarus) was that you could have alternate maps available for a quick switch. You could have a "Valet" flash that would limit engine rpm, for example. The STi valet flash would also severely limit boost, so that the valet would find himself driving a base model impreza.

Does the AP bind to the vehicle, or can it be used on any car? If the latter, then the valet could just as easily flash the car to a high boost flash

But unless you leave yours accessible he would need his own compatible unit with maps. Right?

And you could easily lock yours in glove box / trunk and give him the valet key. (I would expect someone willing to go through the trouble of making a valet map will also carry the valet key.)

And lets not forget that issue a while back with the valet messing with people's cars and posting the vid of it on the net...

AP and all others like it lock to the vehicle- other wise a community would just by one and keep flashing every car that came along and the company would go broke.

So is pretty much a solution for the RX8 like KPro is for the RSX?

If so this is what I have been waiting on.

Im a noob at most of this tuning crap, but Im going to throw this out there: Isnt the only disadvantage to the Cobb unit is Cobb has to do the tuning?

(was that already said?)

Still trying to learn this crap.

Oh ok. Sounds like a worthy investment..

So lets say, Im running at the track & I want to tune if up a bit, if I have my laptop & software installed, I could tweak it right there on the spot?

I have a sneaking suspicion that I'm gonna get raked over the coals for this one, but here goes anyway:

Has Cobb issued an official projection as to when this should be available?

Thats very impressive.. I can see why people are interested.. Worth the money, if we see results like the STis.. They were able to make some good numbers, but Im also guessings thats some pretty aggresive tunes?

Lethal little thing in the right hands.

You won't see those kinds of numbers, unless you are turbo'd.

Turbo cars are easy to generate better numbers by just cranking up on the boost and messing with the mixtures to keep it alive.

Not to say Cobb doesn't do a good job, they likely do, but I would expect numbers similar to RB's flash for the tune on NA cars, but the big plus is the ability to fine tune yourself.

Hopefully, this will also let us mess with fan settings and OMP flow rates as well - if so, I'm in.

The RB flash you're stuck with what the give you. And all they do is turn the fans on sooner and rasie your redline to 9300rpm (where you make no power). Doesn't do a whole lot. The other company I haven't heard of.....

The Cobb Access Port will allow the user to flash multile profile to their stock PCM. And they can make their own "flash" with the tuning software. Plus, you will have the ablitly to block certain CEL's, so you can pass emissions.

The AP is a whole different animal- it allows for total engine tuning, and the others (or at least the RB flash) does not. It's completely different.

And I don't know why AFE is waiting for the Cobb AP. They couldn't make the Int-X or GReddy EMU work, so I guess the Cobb is the answer to all their questions.

not entirely correct. yes they do turn the fans on sooner- andthe other mod available to get the fans on ealier costs half as much JUST to do the fans.

butthe RB flash DOES do more

it does re tune the A/F from about 5 k on up to the new red line. raising the red line by itself would make no more power because before the RB flash the car just went tooo rich. Post RB flash the engine runs leaner up there and makes more power all the way to the new redline- instead of running flat to the old redline.

that is essentially what a "stock" AP flash will do fo an NA car as well. however with the AP you will be able to switch back and forth from the Mazda map to the AP map. and - for a price- you will be able to get software to muck around with the tune to your hearts content. that enables you to make tunes for FI using the power of the stock PCM without a piggy back.

By "costs more than", you mean "costs half of", right? $150 vs $300

Interesting- didn't know they actually altered AFR's. I'm still yet to see a dyno proving any horsepower from the RB flash. The biggest thing for me is you loose it everytime the dealership has to flash your PCM. That won't happen with the AP beacue you can simply reflash it back on.

I don't get your fan statement tho- the Mazsport fan mod is half price. And I did a manual switch that still retains factory PCM control of the fans but I can turn them on whenever I want as well, and it cost me $5 bucks.

d'oh i have fixed my previous post regarding fan mod.

i "lost" my flash once when i deliberatly let the dealer flash it for the Recall flash.

The dealer is now under strict orders to NOT ever flash my car again without getting my permission in person first. I told them i like the way my car runs now and they have no need to alter it.

Ive also designed a cover for the port under the dash i havent actually made yet. itll lock on so they cant remove it to flash it without my taking it off. i havent bothered yet since ive just had my last free service and cant imagine going back to them for the forseeable future.

That's an excellent power curve for a NA Renesis. Which dyno was this data gathered with? was it especially cold outside?

And am I to understand that you put down 225 whp with the only modifications being the RB flash--which looks to have added ~10 peak whp--and the RB REVi Intake+Duct? Assuming you started out with an average Renesis peaking at 180 whp, that means your intake gave you 25 whp. Seems unlikely.

Mazda must have spent a little more time on your 8.

Seriously that's awesome, though! I had thought that in order to make these kinds of gains out of the Renesis--that is, to get the claimed 232 bhp to the wheels--you'd have to go FI. Or at least go overboard with I/H/E, underdrive pulleys, flywheel, fuel management, other wacky things I haven't imagined yet...

Was I wrong?
