So why is everyone waiting for Cobb if Racing Beat and Promaz can reflash the ecu?

So why is everyone waiting for Cobb if Racing Beat and Promaz can reflash the ecu?

So, I'm trying to figure out why a lot of people are waiting for the cobb reflashes, I'm not saying cobb tuning is bad in anyway, as I've seen their products used on subarus and they are amazing. Other than the fact you can (or hopefully be able to use) the access port to flash directly from the car, what advantages would cobb offer over Racing Beat and Promaz?

The reason I'm saying Promaz can do ecu reflashes is because of this page:
http://www.promaz.com.au/rx8.php

As well as https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/axial-flow-supercharger-29778/ <-- certain companies are waiting for cobb to finish their product, so they can release their own.

So any advantages to the cobb?

We performance car enthusiasts, and rotary geeks particularly, are "tweakers" who would prefer to do most of this stuff ourselves rather than pay someone each time we think we can get closer to the "perfect tune".

But to my knowledge...you can only tune if you have the proper hardware, just the access port it self doesn't allow you to tune, don't you need the street tuner software?

Every subaru I've seen that has the AP, just uses the reflashes on the user end, and some cobb dealers have the street tuning software/hardware to go and build maps provided you pay them to do so.

wow, a turbo without a piggyback ECU, and 5 years of warranty and roadside assistance? I'd be thinking about beating down their door if they were somewhere near where I lived....

Oh wait - it says it is a custom ECU - I don't see anything about a reflash?

I would assume it would be similar =/ As I don't think I can interpret ECU as 'piggy back' so unless if they converted to a full standalone, the only thing I can think of is flashing the pcm. But Apparently the North American ECUs and the ecus everywhere else are very different.

I never contacted them to find out though.

because with racing beat's flash, you're stuck with a tune that has to be one-size-fits-all.

with the cobb reflasher and software, you can design a map that works best for your car. you can also erase specific CELs - so if you're catless, you can remove the O2 sensor warning.

and of course, you can design the flash to work with FI without using a piggyback for fuel management.

the old ones were around $700 for the handheld, and a few hundred for the software, not sure what the new ones will cost, they're fancier and have build in LCD screens.

With Cobb you'll get the advantages of a standalone ecu with the convenience of doing nothing more than plugging into your OBD port. No need to wire anything else up. It's the best of both worlds. For a nonturbo car, there is only so much you can do so if someone develops a flash that increases performance across the board, chances are it'll be easier to just use it rather than create your own that may or may not do any better. For forced induction use however each system is different. You need to retune. One tune does not do good for another car unless they have the exact same setup. The advantage isn't that great unless you have forced induction.

Alright guys thanks That's what I thought.

I wasn't aware cobb's street tuner software was available to the public (although I've never looked into it too heavily before)

can the cob tune in real time? or is it flash, see what effect the change had, then modify and re-flash?

how about... with cobb you don't have to mail your ecu to them and you won't be screwed if the dealer decides to reflash your car

I was a big supporter for Cobb, in other words, I was pretty much waiting for there ECU modification too come out. Too me, it really doesn't matter. As a daily driver I don't really want too pay attention to having too deal with tuning because I don't plan on FI, and would rather waste the money too have a laptop software too read the OBD port since I all ready have a laptop. So I decided too stop waiting and change my idea of a ECU modification too that other Racing Beat Flash.

I'm not disappointed at all. Although I haven't tried the Accesport, I haven't seen a single thing that either ECU modification's can't do only in a NA engine.

Of course if you plan a turbo than don't be an idiot and get the Cobb.

If you check the website, they supply downloadable flashes. I would assume they're going to offer flashes for NA on the website.
