Single Exit Trimming

Hey guys, my name is Andrew and I'm the new engineer at Corksport Mazda Performance. We are looking at making a single exit exhaust to compliment our current dual exit and I just had a couple questions.

We are wanting to go with a more canister "drift" style exhaust instead of just half of a dual exhaust and I'm just wondering how willing those of you who want this style of exhaust are to trim away the shroud around the exhaust exit. In order to fit a canister in there it may require some extensive trimming and I want to make sure people are okay with that.

So would you be okay with trimming away a decent amount of the exhaust shroud in order to have a room for a drift style exhaust? Thank you for the help.

-Andrew

Maybe sell a "pretrimmed" shroud for those that are afraid.

usually drift guys are looking for any excuse to hack up their car so this shouldn't really be a problem imo lol.

how much trimming are we talking about? just a little bit in the back of the shroud or would you have to cut the whole bottom portion off?

Yeah, I know Rev, I was making the suggestion for those going for the "look" and are not acual drifters.
My shrouds are completely trimmed and you cannot tell the difference btw.

I have had the Corksport exhaust on my car since August 05. I've had to trim my shrouds as it is. The heat will melt them otherwise.

Yeah you would probably have to end up cutting off the bottom section of the shroud and quite a bit of the inner edge. This trimming will be more than is required with our dual exhaust. We would probably use a short can at the end and another resonator somewhere up stream so that the end won't have to sit at a ridiculous angle to be able to fit all of the exhaust in the small space there is.

And tubing I'm guessing most would prefer a 3" but what about the size of the muffler and tip?

At the risk of thread drift, do you have a target weight? I use your double exhaust largely because it is quite light, but am considering moving to a single to save even more weight. I was going to make a custom unit with a Burns muffler, but if you guys are going to make something comparable that would be fantastic.

Also, please don't make it too loud....

Not sure on weight exactly but I would guess it will be lighter than our dual setup, but that's a guess.

And I don't want to really make it any louder, I like how our dual sounds. That is why I would try to add a resonator further upstream to help keep the noise down.

My dual has a nice sound level. I've made several 1000+ mile (one way) trips and it's OK. I wouldn't want it to be any louder.

Fwiw, trimming the shroud would not be legal for the STX class

not really, I was surprised how little difference a full size 50 lb battery located next to the RH shock tower made on the corner scales

You have to trim the shrouds for the CS dual exhaust anyway so no difference with the single

BTW welcome to CS. Hopefully you will help them create more parts for the RX8.
