Should I buy the RX-8 Auto
#27
Some people want a sports car and cant drive stick and really dont wanna learn since they think they will jack the car up. There is nothing wrong with auto its your car and you drive it, remember that. Just test drive one and see how it feels. Im about to do some major work on the 4 port auto myself. Its a fun car and I love it. This is off topic but if anyone wants to get a greddy informeter, dont since it doesnt work. Just thought I would say that since there was nothing on it on the forums and i bought one thinking it would work.

Go ahead and get the auto. I have an 04 RX-8 Auto and love it.
If you go FI, than depending on the kit, you will be faster than an RX-8 manual (and plenty of other cars), and will have lots of fun.
Some non-FI mods you can make for your RX-Auto and are cheap:
1. Cold Air Intake. Either RacingBeat CAI or AEM/MS CAI.
The ones that work, are getting air from the front of the car. They usually have a ram air attachment or the filter and piping are put in the front of the car. The faster you go, the more air you can get. They usually isolate the incoming air from the hot engine via insulated box or metal box. The type of filter may help to. R-Magic has an air filter that they claim will het you an extra 5 HP.
2. Automatic Transmission Fluid Cooler and change AT Fluid to Royal Purple or Redline.
It allows you to rev the Auto Transmission higher.
3. 2nd Oil cooler, if you get an 04 or 05 RX-8 Auto. 06 Autos have them already.
4. Agency or unorthodox pulley.
5. If you can get it, high performance ECU Flash. Certain 3rd party ones have speed limit, rev limit cut, fan operate at lower temp. to keep engine cooler, and might help with gas mileage.
If nothing else. 1 and 2 will have nice benefits.
The RX-8 Auto also has a manual mode. It lets you shift gears with just your hand, without needing your foot. Its fun to. If you get the ECU flash with the REV and Speed limit cut, that is plenty of fun to use, whenever you feel like it.

Power!!
Buy what you want to buy. Who cares if they buy a manual or AT as long as they buy an 8?? The more people buying 8's the more money Mazda will be willing to pony up for the RX program in the future!!

WELL!!! I did it. I got a 2006 Auto RX-8. Winning Blue. It is currently having the Mazdaspeed kit installed. I CAN'T WAIT!! I don't need a SUPER FAST car right now. Been there, done that twice over with a supercharged 450HP Mustang and a Silvia converted 240sx. When I want to go really fast again 6 years down the road I will either do FI on the 8 or get a new RX-7 (MAZDA ARE YOU READING!!!). Thanks for all the thoughts! I will post pics when I can.....

Make sure you educate the wife about:
A.) Flooding potential - warm up before revving up
B.) Pulling up to curbs and not ripping your new Mazdaspeed nose off
C.) When the light comes on - get to a gas station
D.) No oil changes allowed at "Bubba Lube"
E.) She will want to drive it more than just Saturday - Ummm NO.
F.) Don't follow big dump trucks on the highway
G.) Close the back door first
H.) Don't baby it - wind it up
I.) Park out at the end of the Wal-Mart parking lot to prevent door dings
I've only scratched the surface here...

Umm....read the thread title. The original poster was ASKING for our opinions. I gave mine just like you gave yours. What's the problem?
EDIT: I see now that he's already made his choice so I guess it's a mute point anyways.

It is funny that you say that Firephoenix; it is so very true that once you get a bit older, you get tired of shifting day in day out. I am in sales so it is not simply a morning and evening commute. I have to drive to client appointments also or to the airport during the day multiple times. That stop go is a pain.
I remember thinking just like you KHTM. I had my manual Stang and Silvia converted 240sx. Both of them were VERY much faster than most of the RX-8's on this forum. I am a HUGE driving enthusiast and have 'lived' that live. However one baby and another on the way later I know have a different slant towards live. Thank God Mazda gave the people in my situation a great car that will still allow you to show you are an auto enthusiast while at the same time make allowances for life. Thank you again all for your great insight. Several years from now when the RX-7 is back out, I would have to eye the manual on that one... Oh and Low Fly'n 8 GREAT TIPS!!!
