I just noticed an excellent explanation of the intake on RB's website. Look for the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) under the intake section.

Actually I bought the car before I registered but still after the buy back....I was going to buy the car regardless because I had 3 rx7's in the past and my heart is a rotor so I was just disappointed but still bought the car....All I ment is that you cant believe anything until proof is provided with any claim........

this is gonna sound ignorant on ym part but i'm not a real technical person....anyhow whats the difference between the RB intake they just produced and a CAI...I've read in previous posts they are going to make some short ram this summer and i'm just curious as to what is the difference between them all compared to racing beat's intake. Thanks and please don't bash on me for not knowing...just tryin to learn a thing or two.
thanks-steve

Well for one, RB put alot of effort into maintaining/changing the resonance tuning of the intake. An airbox or some equivalent is vital to this. Most "CAIs" and "SRIs" do away with the airbox altogether and completely disregard the resonance tuning of the rest of the intake tract. Try a Google for "Helmholtz tuning" or "Helmholtz resonance," lots of good stuff out there.

So does the intake help or hurt gas mileage?

Called this morning and ordered mine. They said they'd sold 29 already so I guess I got the 30th one. The guy I talked to said everything is there except they are waiting on the Racing Beat badges that fit on the top. Soon as those arrive they'll be shipping. Since I live about 45 minutes away I'm picking mine up the moment they call. He said the intakes have been selling fast and RB has already ordered a second production run, so I don't imagine it would be all that much longer before more are ready. They are delivering on a first-come-first-serve basis so if you want one get your order in soon.

I can't wait to get mine! I already have the RB exhaust and I had a feeling the combo would be a very nice improvement, and so far those who've tested that combo are confirming that. For those of you concerned about the performance, quality or reliability of RB's products....have no fear. I've been down there several times and toured the factory, talked with both Jim Langer and Jim Mederer and these guys are first class. They know what they are doing and are very honest about it. They won't hesitate to take you on a tour and let you see and talk to the guys in the factory. They're very up-front about what they're doing, what's involved and what to expect from it. If you ever get to talk to either of them they are not the slick, marketing-hype type of guys. They are hands-on "actually do the work and know what they're talking about" kind. They don't produce cheap junk either; their products are extremely solid, well-made and work as advertised. They do it right and if that takes more time and costs a bit more on the final product, so be it. Personally I wouldn't have it any other way.

conversation in another thread that i thought could bear repeating here:

so- mazda wanted to have a really good performing intake PLUS they wanted it quieter. so they made it a true cold air with the straight ram of the vfad PLUS the longer length of of fabric hose. this allows them to keep it quiet AND tune it for when they need the extra air.

by removing this vfad unit, enlarging the air intake opening getting a better flowing filter/horn combo racing beat is able to offer an intake that is more responsive provides a little more power but is louder than what Mazda wanted to come out of the factory. not terribly louder mind you- i like it

Well, for what its worth, there *were* a number of people (of the more respected variety) who were thinking the VFAD was tuning for power at different points in the rev range and that removing it or wiring it open would hurt power lower in the revs. I don't think anyone every proved that with a dyno though.

Here is an email response I got from them regarding the application to the automatic tranny and horsepower claims.

"We have yet to take a look at the auto version, we need to evaluate one to determine the differences between the models. Until then, we can only make a fitting recommendation for the manual cars. On the higher power engines, we are seeing 3-6 HP gains, with most of this at the top end." and

" I am working on preparing the performance data for display on the website. Our dyno computer provides numerical data, not the graphical style that you normally associate with a Dyno Jet chassis dyno."

I ran some tests (not on a dyno) on the stock intake and did find a difference leaving the VFAD open full time. The car is a little more sluggish at lower rpms and throttle levels. With the VFAD closed full time the car obviously makes less top end. the Racing Beat system doesn't seem to suffer these problems even though the VFAD duct isn't there. I don't know why but it's true.

Complete 360 degree horn inlet, no baffles, higher flowing filter media, etc.. maybe?

more respected than me?!?! its okay i was one of them but now i have a better undrestanding.

it would hurt if you left the stock air box in or didnt have some way of increasing the flow while retaining maf stability. see without the VFAD the car would make less power- with the stock air box. but the stock airbox / intake has some compromises to fitler choice/loudness etc. including the bell radius and a smaller air inlet at the front of the airbox. the racing beat airbox is designed to eliminate those compromises while still limiting the noise increase.
