Racing Beat Request for those in South California

Rx-8 Owner,

We have been working hard of a number of new projects around the Racing Beat shop. With the release of the Mazda 6 and RX-8, we have been busy developing new products for each of these applications.

We are currently looking for number of RX-8 owners that can answer “Yes” to the following questions:

Are you located in the Southern California area?
Have you installed an aftermarket exhaust system on your RX-8?
Would you be willing to participate in performance review of your exhaust?

If so, send me a reply at info@racingbeat.com . List your aftermarket exhaust, name, and daytime telephone. Hurry, this project MUST be completed by the 2/20/04. (We will be removing the stock Renesis engine from the dyno and breaking in two race engines.)

If you are chosen to participate, you will be compensated, given a tour of the Racing Beat production facilities, and have a one-on-one tech session with Jim Mederer, Racing Beat’s co-founder and chief engineer.

Thanks,

Jim Langer

i visited racing beat earlier this week. chris in sales was very nice to me and although he was very busy took some time out to talk with me about the 8 and there products out for it.

not to badmouth anyone but one of the people working the sales dept. was kinda rude to me. im only 19, but i feel like i was treated like a 12 year old.

Hey why isn't there anyone in in the Pacific NW? I want to participate! I have modded cars in the past and know what they should do performance wise. Don't you guys want to test your products in the cold??? I'll do it.

Sent them an email offering my car with RX-8 Store exhaust for testing. They responded that that was not one of the exhausts they wanted to test. Maybe they were afraid that the RX-8 Store
would show theirs up.

Could be because RX-8 Store doesn't make the cans themselves... they use magnaflo if I remember correctly.

Wouldn't a big name company like Racing Beat only worry about other big names like HKS, B & B, and GReddy?

Why waste their resources and marketing concerns on RX8 Store? If Racing Beat finds out that RX8 Store's exhaust isn't putting out as much HP as advertised, how many consumers would really care?

A good question. I've wondered how many exhausts Jason has sold. There seem to be a few out there... But this board is mostly Borla with a few Greddy it seems...anything else is running a distant 3rd and 4th...

Oh, I was wondering if there is something not as good about using a magnaflow. Is it preferred (for some good reason) that an exhaust company makes their own canisters?

I think it was RB that put it best as... not just using any old generic can, but one specifically tuned for the unique exhaust pulses of the rotary engine.

The reports and clips say the RX-8 store exhaust sounds good. So I dunno how true that is. but as I remembered RB saying something about that in the past, I figured it might have had an influence on their decision to exclude the RX-8 Store cat-back.

Who manufactures Racing Beat's exhaust?

Whose mufflers do they use?

Who designed it?

Where is it manufactured?

Why do you presume that other exhaust systems will make significantly more power than the RB system? Without independent, head-to-head comparisons, I'd have a tough time picking one system over the other based just on advertised power increase (versus actual power increase). Put another way, I'm very sceptical about anybody's claims for additional power for aftermarket components, because over the years way too many have been proven to be prone to exaggeration...

Regards,
Gordon

Gordon and I are in agreement here. I don't think RB are the type of people to intentional mislead the public, but at the same time I don't think that the competitors are either. So who's telling the truth? Everyone needs to dyno their mods and post it up for all to see... that's the only way for us all to really know.

Does anyone know who designs and manufactures racing beat exhaust products? Also, whose mufflers do they use? Thanks

From the RB website...

"The harsh, high pitch tone of the rotary exhaust has proved to be a challenge to exhaust manufacturers over the years. Many manufacturers that aren't familiar with the high frequency exhaust pulsations and higher exhaust gas temperatures of the rotary engine have produced exhaust systems that fail prematurely due to these harsh extremes. Racing Beat has spent the past 32 years developing exhaust systems for Mazda rotary applications and few aftermarket tuners can match our experience with this application. If you are considering an exhaust for your RX-8, give the Racing Beat system serious consideration.... you won't be disappointed!"

Just incase someone wondered where I saw that comment.

David,

I really couldn't say precisely. The best I can do is say that according to what it says on their site, I am under the impression that they do the design and testing work themselves.

From the RB site...

"Power Output - We have been fortunate to have access to a stock Renesis engine for use on our dyno bench. Utilizing this engine, we have spent considerable time researching the power output from various exhaust configurations on this stock engine. Our research has found that simply adding a large-diameter, "straight-through" muffler is very loud, and power gains are only modest. Further research has shown that a "baffled" muffler canister not only allows the exhaust note to be "tuned" to more tolerable level, but power output does not suffer. We have focused our development efforts on optimizing the power output, while maintaining a moderate, but aggressive exhaust tone.

Sound Quality - We believe that the exhaust note of our RX-8 exhaust system should provide a deep, throaty tone under acceleration, and provide a tone that is acceptable for extending driving trips. Although a "loud" exhaust system may cost less to build and is easier to design, the sound of this type of exhaust system can become very tiresome, very quickly! We have spent considerable time and effort in an attempt to fine-tune the internal canister design of our muffler canister to provide what we believe is the ultimate rotary exhaust note!!!"

I got that from this page... http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda4.htm

I hope that was what you were looking for.

Thanks Japan8!

I wonder why they are using baffled mufflers? That might help explain the power discrepancies.

Don't be too baffled by the term. (sorry, I couldn't help myself... )

It's basically a canister that uses a series of chambers to "tune" the sound to an acceptable frequency, as opposed to a "straight-through" muffler that just absorbs some of the sound.
