Okada Coil - magazine review

Found this article in 'Import tuner' magazine . Sounds very positive - anyone actually installed these on an 8 yet ?

Just looked at their website - looks like the article was copied straight off the site !

Interesting I wonder how well this would work when combined with the HKS twin power pack.

That is pretty much just an ad, not really a "review". That is why it is a copy of the site - its paid advertising.
There is a lot of marketing double-speak in the copy, too.
I'm calling shenanigans.
Ray sent a set of these to a Greek turbo forum member. I think the results are positive, but I believe its butt-dyno (like most of the Greek guys [joke]), so there still isn't any quantitative info on these things.

Chris from Greece is also going to be using them with the HKS. I got him a Helluva deal that I can't get again until Paradox is official. He'll let us all know how well they work and we can thank him later.

For $699/800, I'd rather keep on changing stock ones every time they go.
Unless you are planning to boost your 8 to like 16PSI with something like Mazsport Turbo, what is the point? When someone does it and then posts a dyno chart print with 400 HP and then runs it that way for a while, we'll know. Until then it is all a speculation.
And the product is overpriced.

That's exactly what Chris plans on doing. I also agree that the Okadas are expensive and that's why I would only sell them if I could get them to the street for a certain price, which is far less than either of the prices cited above.

So why the huge price increase for the RX8, the STi and others are way less.

Also, what about something like MSD coils?

Dunno about the price difference and the MSD idea was written about by Mazdamaniac a year or two ago.

The reason the price is so different is cause there is a different market for the STi. More people willing to make parts for the Sti's & such, so more competition & lower prices.

Also, the RX-8 coil from Okada is built using the potted body of an OEM coil.
There is a lot more labor in that.

They are way better then the stock units (not $700 better however). OKADA is not the first to produce these. Most high end car manufactures have switched to this technology years ago. If you do plan on getting these get them for reliability, Power gains will be almost non existent.

Switch to what technology? Plasma? Plasma is electricity. We have no proof what the Okada coils really are. That is why I am skepitcal of them- and they look like stock coils with a sticker.

The internals are diff

It uses high capacity charge/discharge oscillation.

If you hooked these up to an oscilloscope you would see huge peaks and valleys as compared to a standard unit. There is a debate that because the discharge and recharge peaks are so great that it might take more time to charge and discharge but nothing has been proven.

These would never replace a good ignition system and stock coils, but the selling point is they really are very simple to install and will provide better ignition over stock coils alone.

Like I said it has been used for years just most car manf try to cut corners where they can.
