K&N Typhoon review and sound clips

First off I need to say thanks to Huff at Vivid racing for setting us up with the intakes for an excellent price!

Now on to the review! my10ae, RPIRX8, and myself got together over the weekend to hang out and install our new intakes. The installs were quick and painless. Just about anybody who knows what a screwdriver is should be able to install this.

After the installs it was interesting to note that each car had a unique sound. my10ae's auto had a deeper/mellow sound that started just above idle, RPIRX8's 6-spd was a little higher pitched and sounded like it meant business when the fresh air duct opened at 5,500 RPMs, and the Borla exhaust on mine added an underlying growl. Very cool!!! :D

I recorded a few sound clips of each car and edited them all into one file. Check it out when you get a chance.

Sound clips

I also did a few before and after Gtech runs to see if there were any performance gains. The weather and road conditions kept me from doing speed runs but I was able to do some 3rd gear pulls to check the Hp/torque curves.

Note: I don't have any faith in the actual Hp numbers from the Gtech but you can definitely see that there was an increase in power after installing the intake.

Black - Borla cat-back exhaust
Red - K&N Typhoon intake & Borla exhaust

Very cool info Speed Racer. I would like to try that G-Tech in my auto to see what kind of a gain (if any) I get with the intake and my auto. Another tech/run planned soon?

my10ae,
Just send me a PM when you want to try out the Gtech and we'll get you hooked up.

djmano,
Hey I was just trying to have a little fun with the fly by and screeching tires. Just be glad that I didn't find a nice audio clip of a car crash. I think that would have turned a few people green. :p

Excellent work speed! Thank you so much for putting in the time to create this clip. I like the way you put it together.

Were those in car clips with the windows up or down? That howl sends shivers down my spine!

During the "test drive" all four of us piled into the car and went around the block to try it out. Who ever was riding shotgun ran the camcorder and when the temps during the day start dropping below 0F the windows tend to be shut. :p

I figured they were shut.. but rotorheads have been called crazy before! If there are any appreciable differences in sound with the canzoomer I, will you create a similar clip for that?

Hmm... I'll have to give that some thought.

Maybe I can film a before and after run through the gears to give everyone a view from the driver's seat.

By chance did you dyno the automatic? Great Info and clip.

Out of curiosity if you want to keep the black stock box, would the intake fit inside?

All the best!

Wayne:

The stock air box is completely removed for the Typhoon install. The air box only leaves a bottom tray behind to keep warm air from the radiator from entering the intake. There is no cover to remove as it is all one piece.

I will try to get together with Speed Racer again sometime soon and get some G-tech dyno runs. I know, I know not 100% accurate but better than nothing. Once I have the numbers, I'll post them up. I can say the intake does give us auto users more of a push from 4K and beyond. The sound as you could hear is quite loud but music to the ears

Thanks for the info Kevin. I figured as much. I've been waiting for the heat shield which I have seen listed at $265 with intake on a few web sites. I understand that for the auto it may be nothing but a few HP gain, but like any passionate RX-8 owner (lol) it just has to be owned.

Any dyno results would be great!
