K&N Responds About Intake Problems

I emailed K&N about the problems with the Intake I got from them. I told them that the intake was having negative effects on my idle, sometimes to the point of stalling. I also asked that they either refund my money or send me a replacement intake that wouldn't cause any problems. I emailed them about 2 or 3 weeks ago and got a response today saying:

"We have found that Mazda has recalibrated their ECU since we made the intake kit. K&N is currently developing a kit for this application to be released in about 4 - 6 weeks."

The email then went on to say that I could call a number to arrange for a replacement to be sent when the product is released.

So for all of you that are either trying to get rid of your K&N intakes due to idling problems or just trying to deal with them due the large amount of money spent, contact K&N and tell them about your problems. You should get a similar response to mine.

Hope I've been able to help some of you out.

Ryan, I don't intend on changing the subject but how do you like your Nitto's?

I have found that the shaky idle can usually be cured by making a screen to put on the intake pipe that reduces turbulence at idle. That's also what Racing Beat did on their new intake. I ended up replacing my K+N filter with a Blitz SUS screen filter and not only is the intake quieter but even without a screen the idle is smooth as glass.

They are also available in four different universal cone sizes and various adapters, so they can be customized for almost any car. Well I emailed tech@knfilters.com and basically just listed my complaints and stated that a reputable company such as themselves should not have a product that causes these types of problems. I said that I believe a fixed replacement or a refund was necessary. And they responded about 2 or 3 weeks later.

To answer your question Charles, The Nittos are great. I've only had them on for about 2 weeks and I love the performance. I take a lot of drives through the canyons near my house and the tires don't seem to have the slightest problem keeping up with my more than spirited maneuvering. I had the stock Dunlops on my car previously instead of the Potenzas and they definitely out-perform the Dunlops. I dont really need all-weather tires being in SoCal so I went with these. The Pzeros were my top choice but were a little out of my price range. I got my Nittos for about 500$.

And Thew do you sell a screen I could put over the new intake when it arrives? I'd personally rather have another intake but I dont feel like spending another 300$+ when I'm getting a new replacement that supposedly fixes all my previous problems. Or are there any suggestions on what to use for a screen?
Thanks,
Ryan

The intake that thew is describing includes the filter I have been using, happily, for some time. The SUS is much quiter than the K+N/Typhoon most likely due to the velocity stack/radius horn I built for it.

Ryan, thanks for the response. I had severe traction problems with the factory tires, which was made worse when using the nitrous shot I have. I tried switching to 255/45's which are too tall(+1") and they kill my mid-range recovery. I think by going back to 26" tires I'll regain my overall character. Plus, the taller tire ruined the turn-in feel. I'll keep the 255 KDW2's as foul weather tires. Here in MI they'll be handy for it.

I made my own screen using steel entry door screen from the hardware store. This was before I got the SUS filter. I worked great.

IS the blitz intake the same concept as the RB one or is it more compared to the k&n and RE one?

The Blitz SUS is a stainless mesh filter. When I did my swap from the K+N to the SUS I had a dramatic reduction in intake noise. Along with the swap I also made a reducer that functions as a velocity stack much like what RB ended up with.

Hey, Razz, what is all that supposed to mean? Are you talking about Ed Roth?

13.25's may be coming before the nitrous shot, soon. I put some 26" tires back on and the car feels a lot better. My calculations are indicating that my going to 27" tall tires put 3-4 tenths back on my e.t. for a final of 13.7 before nitrous. If I am correct, I'll be hitting 13.3-13.4 real soon. And, if I can get the results out of the nitrous I got last year 12's are coming up in a few days.

Fat?

Hey Charles, was the nitrous a complicated install and about how much does the system run?

Nitrous was an easy install with the Zex #82021 system. From what I understand they now have a replacement fuel line to use instead of having to remove the factory quick-connector line.

I would suggest you read through my two threads on the nitrous install with one change- I moved the nozzle from the rubber flex hose to a location right behind the MAF sensor in the intake tube. I put the nozzle in the same location on both my factory intake and the Rotary Extreme intake and it works well in both cases.

Lately I seem to have some problems with the nitrous and the N flash, but I need to do some data gathering before I can confirm that to be the case. That will happen some time this week.
