K&N drop in filter
Does anyone have the K&N drop in filter in their RX-8? Do you feel any difference in sound, HP or fuel consumption? What about oiling the filter itself? Is this a problem?

I oil the filter with Remington Gun oil that is in a spray can. Just buy it at Wal-mart for $3.00, and it that has enough oil to do multiple cleanings. After I clean the air filte, thenr I clean my Beretta :-)
I do not believe you need to spend +15 dollars on a "re-charge" kit
I have an aFe drop in filter.

I have the K&N--just reoiled mine last weekend. I noticed a slight increase in gas mileage and a slight noticeable jump from a very dirty K&N to the post cleaned and re-oiled one. Other than that the real benifit of this filter is that it saves you money on gas and not having to buy a replacement air filter all the time. Any real performance gain from a paper to a K&N in the RX8 will be negligible. Now combined with the Racing beat air duct...perhaps. These filters work well on stock boosted cars in terms of performance.

Definitly a good investment especially since you can get it for as little as $40~60. It helped my mileage by about .75 MPG on average. Oiling the filter is really easy ust make sure you let it fully dry out after washing it before you re-oil it!

bigmac, still looking to buy a drop in filter?
I just installed the Revi exhaust on a friend's car and he had the drop in filter. Maybe he'd be willing to sell....

I've had mine in since last October and I noticed a very slight change in performance and I can hear it breath a little more than before. I think with exhaust it would make a bigger difference. I like the fact that It's not paper and with regular cleaning they last practically forever.

you all are just talking about the filter for about $40 right.... well I got the typhoon intake and I was actually thinking about going back to stock just because of the warranty issues... I really love the way the typhoon sounds but if this engine messes up for just some odd reason I really dont want to give mazda a reason to not keep it under warranty.
is it possible for a after market intake to void my warranty????
also does anyone want to buy my typhoon intake only had it for about 4k miles.

Searching for info on the K&N and came across this thread....
Just so you know, the issue with the oil on the filter has nothing to do with the engine directly. The oil on the filter gets deposited on the MAF sensor and screws with the ECU since it can not accurately meter the air coming into the motor.
Just FYI

im looking into buying a replacement drop in filter and i want peoples opinions and suggestions on wich filter would be the best replacement. green or k&n ? any other brands worth looking into besides those two? and why is green filters more expensive over the k&n brand? also anyone checked out RE Amemiyas ram air scoop? >>http://www.re-amemiya.co.jp/new_part...air_in_all.jpg.
ill probably just stick with the racing beat ram air scoop even though it looks smaller.
thanks

stick with the RB scoop, it's put together pretty well. As for the drop in filter, they should be pretty much the same.

What I did was I pull it out and clean it every once in a while (say 10K miles) with electric motor cleaner, it works.
