K&n

Is it worth it?

Been told it will increase hp, and also increase gas mileage.

It might increase your horsepower at 7000rpm but will do nothing for normal driving gas mileage. I installed it just to make the car louder. :D

It definitely increases your gas mileage. The only reason for this is that you will never get past half throttle for fear of busting an ear drum. Serious, i have one and i took it off....anyone interested? Too loud for my tastes. It does add power, albeit in the high rpm range.

Re: K&N

I too took mine off. Too loud with no pay off for performance. If anyone is interested mine is chrome with less that 100 miles on it.

How loud exactly? And how much do you want?

Re: Typhoon Intake

The reason I took mine off was because with the automatic I keep it in manual mode. The intake is loud, then when I would switch gears with the auto it sounded dumb and corny. Of course this may be because the car I previously had was a 1999 Corvette with the Borla screamer sticking out the back end, but I didn't like the sound. When I would cruise the highway and go to pass (Seems like that is all I do now :-)) it was so loud I couldn't hear the radio. Also, I put the intake on before my "M" flash and didn't notice that much of a performance difference. Like it has been said before, I think the loudness makes it seem faster. Matter of fact, the "M" flash seemed to add more spunk to the car than the intake.

The K&N isn't all that loud. It all depends on how you drive. If you get on it and really put your foot in the throttle, it gets throaty and roars but, I have never had it so loud as to wish I hadn't put it on. I haven't had the M flash, will probably not get it since it is really only for the flooding issue. I have noticed an increase in gas mileage possibly due to the L flash. I got it right before I put on the intake, so I am not sure which caused which. I like my K&N and I will keep it on. It runs smooth and is quiet when I want it and roars when I want it too.

Correct me if I'm wrong. That's because the K&N is robbing the engine of low end torque. It throws off the work of the SDAIC. I hear the K&N gives 7 HP on top, but how does it look on the low end compared to stock?

I looked at the K&N - too loud. I looked the RE - too cheap. I purchased the SR Motorsports - arrives this week.

Mazda did a very good job in designing the intake on the RX8, I would spend the money somewhere else or buy a drop-in filter...
