K&n

Is it worth it?

Been told it will increase hp, and also increase gas mileage.

GiN 05-25-2004 01:03 PM

It might increase your horsepower at 7000rpm but will do nothing for normal driving gas mileage. I installed it just to make the car louder. :D

Silverarrow 05-27-2004 01:05 AM

It definitely increases your gas mileage. The only reason for this is that you will never get past half throttle for fear of busting an ear drum. Serious, i have one and i took it off....anyone interested? Too loud for my tastes. It does add power, albeit in the high rpm range.

LOL !

I'm installing mine this weekend. It should be interesting since there are several members saying the same thing...

Re: K&N

I too took mine off. Too loud with no pay off for performance. If anyone is interested mine is chrome with less that 100 miles on it.

my dyno driver chair tells me a difference
but i have re intake :)

Re: Re: K&N

How loud exactly? And how much do you want?

this intake is louder than my JIC exhaust

it is real loud

Re: Typhoon Intake

The reason I took mine off was because with the automatic I keep it in manual mode. The intake is loud, then when I would switch gears with the auto it sounded dumb and corny. Of course this may be because the car I previously had was a 1999 Corvette with the Borla screamer sticking out the back end, but I didn't like the sound. When I would cruise the highway and go to pass (Seems like that is all I do now :-)) it was so loud I couldn't hear the radio. Also, I put the intake on before my "M" flash and didn't notice that much of a performance difference. Like it has been said before, I think the loudness makes it seem faster. Matter of fact, the "M" flash seemed to add more spunk to the car than the intake.

Thx MikeB & Grifster. Wonder how my Greddy exhaust is gonna sound....

I want deep and low - throaty.

D MENAC 7 05-29-2004 01:19 AM

The K&N isn't all that loud. It all depends on how you drive. If you get on it and really put your foot in the throttle, it gets throaty and roars but, I have never had it so loud as to wish I hadn't put it on. I haven't had the M flash, will probably not get it since it is really only for the flooding issue. I have noticed an increase in gas mileage possibly due to the L flash. I got it right before I put on the intake, so I am not sure which caused which. I like my K&N and I will keep it on. It runs smooth and is quiet when I want it and roars when I want it too.

That sounds like a description of my girlfriend! :o I had the K/N on mine, it was loud, but sounded good. I went to stock, and thought my car was off when I turned it on (it was soooo damn quiet). I get my RE intake Saturday, hopefully that will be better than the K/N

am i the only one who notice better throttle response and more seat of the pants feel after putting my stock back on?

Navybeardbb 06-03-2004 12:12 AM

Correct me if I'm wrong. That's because the K&N is robbing the engine of low end torque. It throws off the work of the SDAIC. I hear the K&N gives 7 HP on top, but how does it look on the low end compared to stock?

Saint75 06-14-2004 08:02 AM

I installed the K&n intake.. and found it to be Not as responsive.. kinda feel like it's lost a bit of pull... sounds great tho.. but very disapointed..

oh it IS. you'll like it.

but the tips are rediculous.

Nemesis8 06-14-2004 03:08 PM

I looked at the K&N - too loud. I looked the RE - too cheap. I purchased the SR Motorsports - arrives this week.

cortc 06-14-2004 04:48 PM

Mazda did a very good job in designing the intake on the RX8, I would spend the money somewhere else or buy a drop-in filter...
