Intakes Loose Hp????

I talked to the service manager today at mazda and he was telling me that about the mazdaspeed intake and how you will loose 5 hp I just could not understand it... then he said that AEM and K&N and all the others loose from 10 to 15hp because the stock intake is so advanced that they really dont do as good... I really can not believe that I mean wtf why do we buy intakes if this is true... what is the hole point of intakes for this car if this guy is saying that???? does anyone know the dyno on a K&N and all those other intakes and is this true in anyway???

I have the MS. And it DEFINATELY pulls a lot harder from 7000 to 9000 than the stock one does. You just don't gain a lot from them.

You aren't from WA state, are you? Thinking about that - sounds like what the Service Dept at Milam Mazda would say.

Funny how he said the MS would lose 5hp and AEM would lose 10 to 15hp when the MS is a direct copy of the AEM.

He's full of ****.

That guy is an idiot. There were dyno's out there (a while back) that suggested that it might be possible to lose a LITTLE horsepower with the first gen K&N but there's no way it was anywhere near 10-15 hp.

Well there are many reason why an aftermarket intake could lose power vs stock. having the intake end at the cone filer unprotected in the engine bay could lead to lost hp just from the heat. having bad airflow over the MAF is another reason. having the incorrect length of tube or diameter of the tube from the filter to the maf is another reason. the first KNN had all o fthese issues.

some still have the filter unprotected from the heat of the engine bay- these will lose power vs stock.

not having a proper velocity stack/"bell" opening into the intake pipe could make you lose power

if the oil from an oiled filter disrupts the MAF then you could lose power over time amongst other issue. most use oiled filters.

these are issues with aftermarket intakes for all models not just the rx-8. whats different is that the rx-8s intake was very good out of the factory compared with other companies stock. so when fitting an aftermarket intake its harder to make gains and easy to lose. be very careful of what you get.

MS AEM and RB dont lose power and actually gain some. KNN type 2 does show some gain as well- just dont believe the number they market

I can tell a difference with my AEM for sure, it's nothing earth shattering, I'm not pulling 0-60 times in the 3 second range or anything silly, but it's definitely added some degree of extra power and it sounds f-in awesome
That dude is probably one of those people stuck at a job he hates, he probably doesn't want people modding their cars as it makes his job a little more difficult so he has to talk trash to discourage people from doing anything, I've been to places where they're all "leave it stock, you'll mess it up", and it's the worst, they take shortcuts and cheese it just to get you out of their hair. Find a place that's mod friendly and you'll be set for life

The service tech makes a valid point if he was using the K&N TYphoon type 1 as his basis for comparison. I thinkg Racing Beat has the most advanced intake. And the OEM one is second best....IMHO. K&N Typhoon Type I was suppose to loose you ~3 HP or so.

For example I was drag racing at http://www.dunnbensondragstrip.com/
and talking to a fellow who raced a WRX. He was running ~18+ PSI and had the OEM filter set-up with a K&N high Flow panel filter. I asked him why he was using the OEM air filter box. He said he has tried CAI, short rams, cones, etc... and he gets the best elapsed times with the Stock box and a drop-in hi-flow filter.

I think you can do just as well modding the OEM airbox as spending $300+ for a filter on a stick.

AEM is cheaper and the MS is just a copy of the AEM. You can get AEM on ebay.

Otherwise MS can be bought from the mazda dealership, or online mazda parts stores.
