Impressions on the K&N panel filter
For all you guys that feel an increase from the K&N: How many miles was on your original air filter when you replaced it?
One of the biggest issues with a "upgrade" like an air filter or spark plugs is that the old ones are often worn out or pluged up. So the replacement may not be better than stock, but it is better than what you had.

Actually, looking at Mazda's service schedule, it says the filter should be cleaned at 15,000 and 30,000 miles, and then replaced at 37,000 miles.

can someone with a k&n drop in filter check the intake boot between the MAF and throttle plate? if you find filter oil puddling up along the ribbed portion of the boot, could you please verify for me? otherwise, i'll eat my words and assume it's blow by.

Just went down to the garage (just for you DANomite 
) and pulled the accordian off to check for the oil. There is oil in the last 2 ribs by the throttle body, but it definatly looks and smells like motor oil.

went ahead and dropped the 50 bucks for a K&N they had to special order it at autozone. but it was my birthday and kinda a gift to myself. Havent gotten it out on the highway or played with it but in the short trip to the car wash i could hear a slight difference.
Either way i'm happy, the stock filter was thick as hell and (me being a dork) blew air from my mouth thru each, i could actually feel the air on the other size with the K&N, with the stock it was like blowing air at a brick wall.
hell for that cheap of money its nice knowing my car will breath a bit easier. anything else is just bonus

Just ordered mine....I am getting the 15k service done and for the Mazda OEM it was going to cost $40.00 at the dealer so I figured what the heck, I'll get the K&N drop in. By doing it myself it will only cost me $5.00 over OEM...Should have a review by Mon. 03.27.06

Noone has mentioned the most important part of adding a K&N....
Do they still include a "K&N Filtercharger Equipped" sticker with new filters? That sticker alone, when stuck on your airbox, is worth 15hp. MINIMUM. 20 if you stick it on a window.

That's nothing...adding a Racing Beat or Amemiya or Pettit or any other rotary tuner sticker adds like 50bhp, but they have to be placed level on a spoiler to work properly otherwise they lose power. And if you have more than one sticker, there is not law of diminishing returns to just keep adding them and counting the extra 50s.

There was something online a few years ago called "Type R your Jetta", which added all kinds of goofy paint, wings and exhausts as you clicked it. I seem to remember it being associated with an animated short showing a Jetta (or GTI) racing a Civic, with an hysterical "weem beem beem beem" voiceover as the cars "raced".

Back in college there was a guy with a fixed up Saturn and it actually had Racing Beat stickers on it. One day, when my RX-7 was parked next to him and he was getting out of his car I asked him about the Racing Beat sticker and why his Saturn had it. Installed the K&N drop in filter yesterday! When I seperated the intake hosing to gain access to the box to remove the OEM filter I found some oil in it...not a ton though.
As for the K&N filter, I am glad I got it. I agree it does add a touch of bass to the sound. You can also hear the intake sucking in air with a slight high freq. whistle when you really get on it.
The engine idle is slightly smoother and the engine pulls smoother through the RPMs. I cannot say that the car feels faster from 0-40 but above that it seems to have a little more punch. Probably feels that way because of the butt dyno effect.
Glad I bought it...the sound is good, the engine runs smoother and I don't have to buy another filter again! Here's hoping for better gas mileage too!

Cost is of no concern as long as that suction intake is sucking you hard earned cash.BURN!

I've had my K&N filter for about a month now. I feel no difference in performance and my car still idles as smooth as ever. I might hear a slight difference in sound - its hard to tell as I had also installed a Greddy SP2 cat-back two weeks earlier. My car is an '05 with 7000 miles and the stock filter was clean as a whistle when I took it out.
