Ignorant Owner seeks Oil Help

Hello, everyone. I am new to these forums, my shny new RX-8, and moddig in general. Until recently, I drove a Dodge Durango and let that thing just stay right as it was. But anyways, people are telling me to get synthetic oil for the RX-8. Should I? Why? Also, I heard the engine uses oil in the combustion process. Is this true? Does that mean I have to refill the oil often? I really dont want to screw over my brand new car. Please help a n00b out. Thanks!

Dude, read your user's manual about the oil refill. The harder you drive it the more it will use, just check it every so often and if it gets low top it off. I had three RX-7s prior to my 8 and none of them ended up using as much oil as my Olds Omega (hand-me-down from the parents while in college) so its not that big of a deal.

As for synthetic, you can but you don't need to. Search the forum for this topic and you'll find a bunch of people passionately arguing with each other about whether you can or not. Even Mazda can't tell a consistent story here. The bottom line is to use oil that meets the requirements in the user's manual, change it regularly as with any car, and top it off every so often. If you do all that, you'll be fine, synthetic or not.

Yes the RX-8 uses more oil.
Just make sure you check it frequently and fill where needed.
I check my level every week... just to make sure

There will always be a debate over synthetic.
Mazda recommends against it.. for some reason..

Many of us are using synthetic with great results.

I highly recommend it.. but the decision falls on you.
Use Redline or Royal Purple.

As previously stated, its up to you to use synthetic or not. Just telling you though, synthetic leaves behind a film when burnt. Once again, its up to you. BTW, before i got the car i kept reading that the car was gonna EAT oil, but it doesnt. The manner in which you drive determines how much you add. I usually dont have to add until every 1500 miles or so. Hope this helps

I'm up to 4,000 miles on mine and I've yet to even see the oil level move on the dipstick. I changed the original oil out @ 1500.

Theres something that's noticeably different about this forum than any other... oh! It's that you are all useful and helpful! I've seen people get flamed for simple questions, and we all seem to be helpful to one another. Its very refreshing. Thanks. Also, I found the Oil thread and it was quite informative. Thanks!

Myth Alert! Synthetic leaves behind no such residue.

What's the pic for? We've seen RX-8's with huge park bench wings.

Remember to use 5-20

Your car actually says "No Fear" on it?

That's the lamest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.

No Fear was a semi-cool clothing line back in, what...1994? That lasted about a month.

I'm still confused why he posted that pic in this thread though. I was looking for his pic with the car changing the oil or something... anything to do with Oil. Instead all we see is the wing and the No Fear... Hmmm.

But ya, 5-20.. check ever so often depending on your driving.. and Pull over to the side immediately if the oil light starts blinking
