err, on its own it won't do a darn thing for you, other than make your wallet a lot lighter.

um, a complete engine performance buildup where your combustion chamber presssures and temps are such that you absolutely must have that kind of wattage behind your spargplugs. i'm sure it'd also help if your redline was approaching 11 or 12k rpm. it would need to be run with a complete stand-alone ECU replacement. you're looking a serious dyno-thumping situation here, not an intake and exhaust.

The added spark intensity would be a good thing and wouldn't hurt power. Whether or not you would feel it is another story. The bad thing is that the stock RX-8 ignition coils are so pathetic that you would probably fry them. Jacobs makes some really strong stuff and their packs used to fry the much stronger 3rd gen RX-7 coil packs.

First, the RX-8 uses four separate coils, fired variably (that is, timing is adjusted for each plug on the fly). Sooo, you would have to decide if you are just going to do leading (two channel unit) or both leading and trailing (four channel unit).

Second, you can't use the stock coils with an aftermarket ignition. The stock coils take a logic pulse (5V 5 mS on time) and have a transistor that grounds the coil so current flows into it (charges it). When the 5 mS pulse ends the coil fires. There is no way to increase the spark energy with an aftermarket ignition. So you will also need new coils.

I think Maniac tried a system with box and coils but it had no benefits, so he removed it. If he sees this he may comment.

I ran across something by Revoltion (http://www.revo-tune.com) called a plug cord groung system. It appears to be similar in function, but not exactly design to the Nology Plug wires. It has high capacity plug wires joined together with a grounding system like many that are for sale (such as the Mazda one from Canzoomer). The maker claims ABOUT 5hp increase. 34,800 JPY

I have nology on my bike and it certainly pulled stonger with them on my 400cc v-twin bike. It onyl got better when I added Nology's Torque Master plugs too. So I'd say that you can get some performance improvement from these products. Just be careful which you buy. Not all are equal.

You know... I should get paid (by the parts import/exports in particular) for all the JDM parts info I post... good for their business! :D

Autobacs ground and plug cords

I've found a product similar to the one I posted earlier, but this one is made by Super Autobacs...

Plug cords with earthing ground. Stregthens the low-mid-speed combustion in particular.

Revolution X Plug Cord

Here is some more info and a pic of the earlier mentioned Revolution X plug cords.

Plug cords with earthing ground system. The plug cords are covered with a stainless steel mesh and the cord main body works using a condenser effect, which stregnthens low rpm combustion. Grounding directly attached to the plug main body has the effect of strengthening high rpm combustion as well. Using this system when used on a Type S (250ps JDM/238hp USDM) and has the potential to produce beyond the about 5hp.

I had an MSD DIS setup for a few weeks.
Worked like a charm.
It also produced no detectable power gain whatsoever.

The only problem with the MSD was I could only run it on the leading plugs. A box like the AEM C2DI would be able to run all for channels, but I still don't think there would be much benefit.

The stock coils suck, but they aren't really being asked to do all that much since the Renesis isn't a wasted spark setup and runs at fairly low pressure and lean mixtures.

Thanks for the conversation on this topic. I have been keeping my eyes open for possible ignition upgrades and these discussions are helpful.

In another thread I talked about this briefly... I've felt a noticable improvement in torque on the low-mid range on my 400cc bike. Other's in the states riding the 650cc version have reported similar improvements. Check out http://www.svrider.com . No dynos or anything... and I doubt it makes a whole lot of power, but you get a nice like 2-3 hp I'd imagine.

What I would really like to see are significantly stronger coil packs. If we had those, the rest could follow. Anyone know someone within MSD or a similar company that we could talk to about making some?

One could swap in coil packs from some other application that uses a DIS setup.
It would probably be more beneficial to use an entire capacitive setup like the AEM with new coils. The whole thing would be less than $500 (only $250 or so more than just replacing the coils) and would provide the benefit of better, longer sparks with more robust components.
