Hunting Rx8 Differetnial Gears

Doe's anyone know any company that may have a ring and pinion set for the RX8?
Do any Japanese companies have sets available?
The OEM manual gear set is 4.44, looking for something in the 5.0-5.4 range.

Cheers.

there is a 5.12 available from Mazdaspeed Motorports, it is big bucks, $3,600.00 just for the R&P, this is what they use in most of the pro road race series

there's an aftermarket 4.77 available for much less, try a search

Ditto on a desire for the numerically lower diff.

With a properly tuned turbo, 1st is too low...you lose time with the 1-2 shift. Also, it would be nice to spin at <3500 rpm @ 75 mph.

I'm not sure if the new Miata uses the RX-8 differential, I know the Mazdaspeed6 uses the RX-8 differential, that might be an avenue for a taller gear ratio, something to check out anyways

Why not opt for the slightly more aggressive final drive, and go for a taller 6th gear? Is it very difficult to machine a new 6th gear? It seems like it shouldn't be too difficult, but I haven't seen many people even mention it.

Aoshi.....

I agree, I would love a taller 6th!

I never NEVER use 5th - I accelerate to 8000 revs, thru third or fourth, then drop into sixth for cruise. You wouldn't be giving up ANYTHING with a higher sixth, there is no acceleration there anyway, you'd probably just gain gas mileage.

That's exactly what I mean. 75mph is right around 4000rpm and that is crazy. If we could drop it about 500-600 rpm that would be awesome.

I agree, a higher ratio through gears 1-4 & a longer 6th gear & I would be the 1st in line for it.

Mazmart is planning to sell 4.10 rear ends for the RX-8. No word yet on availability or price. That would be the way to go in my opinion. The rear end is already too high numerically. You already shift through the gears too fast for normal street driving.

When is higher, high enough? Why does everyone always want more? When is it a waste of time to go any higher? Why not a 10.1 rear end for all the acceleration freaks so they can hit max rpm at 100 mph? You'd get there fast! When will it end? Why can't people go down for once assuming they already have too much?

Most of us don't need to hit 140mph, but we'd like to accelerate faster. I know that I definitely would love more acceleration as I find I would never get close to our top speed. I'm not disappointed with the stock final drive, just the 6th gear.

Therm 8, I didn't even think about that. D'oh. Someone build me a taller 6th gear...please?

Unless you floor it everytime you drive it, why do you need more acceleration? You will absolutely get noticably worse gas mileage. It probably won't be much more acceleration anyways. At least not enough to make much of a noticable difference.

I am well aware of that. I know that I'll get worse gas mileage, but I'm not hellbent on getting a more aggressive final drive, just something to think about. I'm more concerned with a taller 6th gear. That would be very beneficial to me as I do too much driving(really not that much) and don't get paid enough to pay for teh gasoline.
I appreciate your concern and your advice is always more than welcome. Thanks RG.

I do agree that a taller 6th gear would be nice. I'd actually like to see 5th and 6th spaced out a little farther from 4th. The car almost needs a 7th gear when cruising.
