How about a BRZ instead,. 200hp 2.0 liter DOHC 4 cylinder aluminun block. rear wheel drive, limited slip rear, dual piston front calipers, 300lbs less weight, good gas mileage at a reasonable price. Only bad thing is it requires premium gas. I think this car is making mine look like an antique.

I was told by a knowledgable owner that for daily street driving its worse than the RX8. You have to beat it to death to get the performance potential out of it.

You should be using premium fuel in your 8. If you can't afford to, then this IS NOT THE CAR FOR YOU

I don't understand how "premium fuel only" is a bad thing

Imagine your the coach of your favorite sports team, your not gonna have them eating **** food and booze are you?

No your gonna make sure they are eating the perfect blend of carbs proteins and good fats to ensure they perform at the best of their abilities.

Your car's the same, don't you want it to perform it's best?

Let us not get too crazy here since there are several factors that go into any car purchase. The fuel mileage and operational cost has to be considered since these cars were not marketed for the extremely wealthy owners who have money to burn. After all Mazda decided to discontinue these cars and I am sure that the cost to drive was one of the reasons. When I purchased my car it seemed to have all of the right factors for a track car but later realized that for street driving and commuting it has some definite negatives, one of them them poor fuel mileage especially for such a small motor. It is good if you want to see flames out the back but a little of that goes a long way. But you are probably right in that it is not for me and many others. There are too many other cars out there that exceed the RX8 in street performance without the penalties. And as for track performace I have not seen any evidence that the 2 rotor has any overall advantage either. Even after 40+ years of rotary development I would be better off with a early Datsin 240Z with some basic suspension and chasis mods.

That sounds ridiculous when compared to a Renesis rotary. When you want it to go you have to rev it up to 6 or 7 grand!

Just saying that for such a old vehicle it is quite amazing the way it outperforms the latest and greatest. Looks are not great to me but I guess looks are not everything. Regretably for me is the not having better judgement for in my choices.

Was there a 'fast' version, because this '70 they tested was slower than a 2012 Mazda 3i or Ford Focus hatch...even an '12 MX-5 does 1/4mile in 15.0 @92.6 (R&T) and that's far from what I call very fast.

It will keep right up with your neighbor's Bonneville... At Orange County Raceway the test car ran through the quarter in 16.1 seconds at 86.5 mph more than one second and 9 mph quicker than a Triumph TR6.

.... With the help of two SUs and a 9.0-to-one compression ratio it generates 151 horsepower at 5600 rpm, and if you are so inclined you can turn it all the way to 7000 rpm before you hit the red line. We aren't inclined, however. Like all Datsuns, the torque curve is as flat as Nebraska and the engine noise is so unpleasant above 6500 that there is just no reason to ever go up there.
