HKS Hi Power Questions

Hey All

At the moment i am running 2.75 inch extractors (xtreme rotary), 2.75inch 200cell metallic hi flow cat, and the borla exhaust.

The problem occurred after installing the hi flow cat, and this raspy metallic sound started occurring, initially believed it was rattling against something, turned out that is due to the insufficient packing inside the borla which creates this sound.

Now i am looking at the HKS Hi Power, just a few question, Just how loud is this exhaust......

and does it create a raspy sound? i was watching trannyical's youtube video of both and as far as i am aware the HKS didnt produce the rasp, but the volume really worries me, is it really as LOUD as people say it is? In comparison to the Borla?

Mind you i will also be supercharged when the exhaust do arrive.

Regards
Jason

It's not as loud as some Honda exhaust kits...
but it is decently loud when the engine is under load. I'm not sure how loud it would be with a mid-pipe or high flow cat.

I'm running it with the stock cat, and it's relatively loud, but not obnoxious. I haven't heard it compared to the borla though. My wife can hear me from about a quarter mile a way if she's outside and I get on it. At idle and just cruising, it's fairly tame. I haven't had any trouble with it or any unwanted attention. It is not raspy at all and doesn't bellow as much as say a Greddy SP2. It's actually only a tad louder than an SP2, so if you've heard one, you can get an idea for sound.

Im running it with headers and an RP supercat. Its loud as hell I hate it from 2-4k once the APV's open up around 6k with the porting and the whole exhaust system it sounds like a freaking v8. Its light cheap and my whole system is 3" from the header back. I truly hate the sound until 6k. Stock cat makes it a bit more bearable.

If you get a dual resonated midpipe you should get some nice exhaust notes. plus your blown so that will quiet it down even more.

The best sounding exhaust is the RB IMO. But its heavy in comparison.

happy hunting.

I like mine but with a aftermarket mid pipe it is loud as ****. I tried mine with a SR catless non resonated pipe and with a single resonated RP pipe and it is still loud as crap. Hopefully i will get my BHR pipe soon and we will see what the volume is then. If it does not come down I will have a resonator welded in. A dual resonated pipe would be the way to go.

The exhaust is very, very, very light. Overall I like it, it's just too loud.

I was thinking of getting the RB resonator and welding that to my super cat. I think that would sound amazing.

9K, I'll have to see what you think of the BHR pipe with it once you get it. I'm thinking of going that route, but it won't be for a while.

Phi, How much louder is it with the RB dual rez?

Another local guy here had the same exhaust with a rx7 store high flow cat and it was still pretty damn loud.

1. In AUS you are stupid/crazy running without a cat the fines are epic and there is a huge crack down on modified cars in Melbourne.

2. The supercharger will NOT decrease exhaust dB levels. Tofu you will be as loud or louder then mine was NA, with the same midpipe, due to the supercharger.

Every car that I've heard go FI changed the exhaust tone, It made it more deep with less rasp.

RX8's an M3 a 300zx and a 240sx.

Thanks for the input guys, i think the exhaust will be too loud.

Two option i have seen are

1. Apexi Active Silencer (a silencer that is active during light/cruise throttle) and opens up with heavier load and WOT, apparently up to 7dB decrease

2. Contacting Charles in regards to the Apexi Exhaust system on the BHR website, does anyone know anyone that has it? reviews?

Can not run without a cat here, a 10,000 fine.

On another note, i am aware it is the increased flow that causes the borla muffler to make that metallic sound inside the muffler, (due to insufficient packing).

I am pretty sure wielding on another resonator will not get rid of the sound, but as far as i am aware a resonator helps with the higher pitch of volume, so would it help?

Regards
Jason

P.S thanks for all your input so far

I had the hks hi power with ap midpipe and it was loud as hell but i loved it until i started getting pulled over all the time for it. You just have to keep the rpms down around the cops.

Im buying the HKS next month. Everyone is trying to talk me out of it because of the single sided but I love this exhaust, always been my favorite since the day I first heard it. I also have an RP midpipe (no resonators) but from the sounds of it, lol, I may be running the HKS with a stock cat.

Street racing is big around chicago-land so cops are always busting cars for the stupid stuff like loud exhaust, tints, front plates; you know, the BS. lol

Whenever there is a downhill I coast to limit the noise, haha. With a catless midpipe is it loud.

first off.. you tube videos really don't do any full justice when it comes to see what an exhaust sounds like, an example i had an greddy exhaust with a 3" mid pipe with no silencers. people tell me that i could be heard from at least a mile or more away if i got on. i thought an HKS hi power in the future but going with the HKS Carbon TI muffler and getting the exhaust the way i want it.

But over all to me all cats = not as loud , care about people feelings also u don't care for exhaust drone and such , Running no cats = F-U i don't car what people think. love me or hate me this is my car

just wondering if the single sided exaust has any other advantages beside being light? and does the exhaust improve performance at all?? thanks

it's rumored that it provides good gains due to the fact that it has very few curves in comparison to other catbacks.

However, most of the gains in an exhaust setup will come from a midpipe since the OEM cat is very restrictive. The OEM catback doesnt have much untapped power, its just heavy.

Don't expect more than 0-3whp gain from a catback alone, this mod is more for cosmetics, weight, and sound than anything else.

where does everyone get the HKS hipower from? I think BHR has it for $599 shipped but a random google search brings up some other sites that never been heard of selling for cheap. Where should I get it from if I want new? thanks

^Look at the forum vendors. This exhaust is popular and sold by many vendors here. I bought mine from assaultech for something around $500.
