Finally got my exhaust.....
I'm sure getting an exhaust is nothing new to most people here but for me it was awesome.
So it's been over 1 year now since my original post about getting an exhaust. I had taken my car to Altered Atmosphere Motorsports in Gaithersburg, MD since I've known the owner for several years and he told me that they were developing some RX-8 parts. After many day long trips to AAM they finally fitted a final product on my car 2 days ago. I got to drive away with it that same day.
The first thing I noticed about it, was the sound, but then again who wouldn't after getting an exhaust. It sounds sick, and not like any other exhaust for the 8 that I have heard. Very throaty and not at all raspy.
Then you start looking at it: large tips, fill out the gaps in the rear bumper nicely.
Anyway, I'll try to post some pics and you all can judge for yourselves.
Pics are here.
Sound clip is here:

Seeing what Altered Atmosphere has going on for themselves was one thing that makes me want to open my own place or change careers and work for a reputable shop in a warm climate.

Is Mike still running AAM? I have known him for awhile as well, they made parts for my G35 and now ia mass producing them. The guys at AAM are great and their work is amazing! I had no idea they started making parts for the 8. Last time i was there they were just learning to use their new flow jet or c&c machines(cant remember) But their shop is amazing and the guys are great. I will deff. be checking out there parts for the 8.

^^ definitely cheap and dirty, amateurish even, they used steel mig wire to weld the stainless, hence the rust, but it could be just a rough prototype
dropping down from 3" into a smaller size is the way to go IMO as there's no need to keep it 3" once you split the flow in half and keeping it 3" all the way results in excessive noise, I would drop down to 2.25" though, even 2" once it goes dual would be adequate for an NA engine and will provide the best sound damping without impacting flow

You are also correct. There is no need to keep it 3", which is why it drops down into dual 2.5". For NA 2" would be perfect but if you read the description of it on their site, this was designed for higher performance engines.
Here are some final product images from their G35/350Z line.
