Well, something wasn't machined true. For the details feel free to ask Paul at Mazmart. I know he said one of the major consequences would have been quite a bit of noise. So far this diff is very quiet, quieter than the stock one.

Why? To make it accelerate a fair amount faster and rev faster.

Some of us need automatics for one reason or another...

Just an update. I've had a chance to drive it a couple times on a few of our big tollways now, and responsiveness is definitely improved.

im loking into doing this mod, anyone have a detailed description on what pre-requirements i need for this. i have an 04 6speed with about 68k on the odo. how much approx am i looking at for an instalation, and aprox how much down time am i looking at. for someone who plans on staying NA and just wants better acceleration and quicker response would this be a good route to go...can i keep the rest of the oem parts (LSD, and other housing parts?)

how well does this work with a lightened flywheel (act prolite?)

You need roughly $200 of bearings and seals

Well, I got the FEED gear from JonDemand. That was 675 I think with shipping. But that was back in January. Mazmart charged me 450 for the differential build (including some machining they had to do on the FEED gear to get it to work properly), plus a 500 core deposit. I got the 500 back when I sent in my old diff. I paid a mechanic about 450 to install the diff, but he's the cousin of a good friend so I probably got a good deal on that. It was about 50 bucks for Paul at Mazmart to ship me the diff, and about 50 for me to ship the old diff back.

So total cost to me was about 1700. It doesn't give you huge gains, so it is hard to say if it is worth it or not, but I'm glad I have it. It makes the car more fun to me, lets me get into the upper revs more quickly. But you aren't going to get huge gains from this, so if you are on a tight budget and are saving for FI or something you might want to pass it up.

I definitely highly recommend Mazmart. Paul was great about keeping me up to date, and the quality is top notch. This diff feels much smoother than the factory diff. Of course, considering who built it (Rick Engman) I'm not suprised. I'm proud to say part of my car was built by such a talented and prestigious guy.

Sam at JonDemand was also great to deal with, but he moved on to another vendor. He's still on the forum, so you can look him up.

There is another vendor I saw that sells the FEED gear, I believe it is Mazdaparts.com

I should also say that I have the AT. I'm assuming you'd notice similar things with the MT, but your first gear is already pretty low. The final ratio is still lower than the final ratio I have in my first gear, even with the 4.77 rear gear.

thanx guys u answered all of my questions and added great info to this already great thread on the feed. id love to go FI but for warranty purposes is the reason i am deciding not to, un less i can get a pro rated refund from my aftermarket warranty company i really dont want to loose the money as since my 3 year 36k warranty cost a little over 1200 bux!!!!!!!! my car runs great but knowing my luck as soon as i void the waranty is when somethin will go wrong lol.

the feed on paper seems like a great mod for me as the one thing i love most is the rev happy engine, so im guessing with a lightweight flywheel (which is on the way) and my light weight pullies in addition to the FEED drive installed, id have a nice accelerating car which can go from 1k to 7k in a blink of an eye. but at 1500-17000 bux that is quite steep. i will have to think long and hard on this. i found a local seller who is selling at a reasonable price and seems like a rare find.

Dude, if you don't know the basics on installing the different rear-end ratio and what its benefits/drawbacks are, why have you even bought one?

If you are going to be cruising alot at 100 MPH (!!!!) a shorter gear ratio is not for you. Drag racing alot? then maybe.

No one else reported any issues with their FEED gear besides me that I know of. Mr. Engman was able to fix it with some machining. I believe he said it would have worked the way it was, but it would have been noisy for a street car. Now my diff is smoother than it was stock.

So since no one else reported issues, it may have just been my particular gear.

I do know that for 09 Mazda is going to the 4.77 gear standard. Wonder if they are sourcing it from FEED?

You can get the car lose traction in any power dude. It is the tyre losing grip to start the drift and on the limit of tyre grip while drifting.

I don't think a final drive is in the equation of drifting.

I have that final gear, it is not much about drifting (i love tracking my car, not drifting it) but it is definitely easier to keep it in the range you want since you have a shorter final gear. You will have the same power yet you will deliver in an easier way to the ground.
Like putting a differnt gear on a bike, same legs but you can spin your wheel at a different speed =p
