Custom REAL COLD AIR
this is my modified version of the RE intake. what do you guys think? one problem though......i removed the stock intake hose that leads to the front, wher do i put the vac line from the stock intake hose. the vac that line opens and closes the first stage door heres a pic..problem: the idle is kinda random at times too, from 800-1000k any ideas of why guys? maybe the comp needs to adjust?

a few questions...
How much of a performance boost do you think you'll get out of this mod?
Is there going to be anything to protect the filter from sharp pebbles, rocks, etc?
Considering where you're mounting the filter, it will get clogged up very quickly with all the road dust coming directly at it from other cars ahead of you. Don't you think that will be a problem?

Don't worry about sucking up water. You would have to physically drive through a flood with the entire filter completely submerged for that to happen. The filter will get dirty quickly though and probably need cleaning every month or two. This is what I have to do to my low mount Honda filter.
I am curious to hear how the car runs. Chuck at RE has stated that the maf sensor makes the car run funny with a long pipe. This may be what you are experiencing. I am just dumbfounded as to how the RX-8 maf is so much more sensitive to intakes than other maf's. I believe that it can be made to work. Plug off that one vacuum line. I will tell you what I noticed when I made a long cold air intake kit for my Honda. As opposed to the short kit, I gained low end power and gas mileage. The intake isn't near as loud as it was either. This will probably be the case in your scenario too. Let us know how it drives and what kind of mileage you are getting. I'm curious to see if there is a noticable difference or not.

the car idles funny, thats all that bugs me, as of the vac. line thanks for the info Rotarygod. as for the intake, i covered it up with heat wrap, like they do with some race cars, im not sure if it helps but i know it gets real hot in the engine bay, the intake sounds nice, its loud when i hit the gas.... is the short ram louder? as of RPM i think i get up faster, im not sure yet. ill test some more

now gas millage, i just re-filled today because yesterday all i was doing was mashing on the pedal to hear the howl =D i'll record my Millage in 3 days or so

My SR had a pretty stable idle, so I bet it is the length and diameter of the intake tube that creates the perfect airflow.

First, you are asking opinions. My first question is how do you plan to clean the filter when it does get dirty? Do you have to pull the front of the car off just to do this? Here is a suggestion I might make. You position the intake tubing and the filter much the same way as the K&N intake. Then build a box around it a bit tighter than what I did and you funnel the air via a hose connected to the box, as you did with the hose that runs to the filter through the original intake hose opening. The one I have doesn't address everything that you are trying to do here. Here are a couple of pics of a window box that I put on my K&N for dress up. It is not sealed in the very least but if should draw most of the air intake from the stock tubing. If you do a better job of sealing the box than I did, you should accomplish this with having a filter that is accessible. As a lot of other after market CAI manufactured devices do, it does effect the idle slightly. You are experiencing what many others have already. There is a service buletin out on this if a customer comes in and complains about idle and they have an after market CAI, the service people are supposed to replace it with a stock intake.

I hooked up the K&N just as the instructions said. Used the vaccum hose to the connections that the kit provided. Most of the cold air is drawn from the front stock supply. I know that some, most likely, does come from the engine compartment. This is not a sealed box by any means. However, apart from the K&N heat shield that was supplied with their kit, I only used three pieces of plastic to build this. The cover is obvious as well as the sides. The sides I attached with trim tape. I still have plans to use some insulation on the rear of the heat shield and to plug the rear of the heat shield where the intake passes through. The goal is to get it to draw as much air from the front of the engine compartment and stock tube as possible. I have not noticed any lagging what so ever in the acceleration except at the 4200 or so RPM which is normal as I understand.

The two parts that are mounted to the stock intake are the MAF and another valve type that is remounted on the back of the K&N heat shield. This is a very small tube though. it does go to another area behind the intake manifold.

I like the concept of the cold air intake . But, like everyone else has been saying, the position of the CAI would quickly dirty the filter. Any solution to that? Perhaps making a shroud or something to that extent so the tube would only suck air, instead of random particles? Is it necessary to keep the VFAD, or could this modified Rotary Extreme intake live without it?
