I know a lot of you guys out there have a custom intake for your turbos so i was wondering about a custom one that would be for N/A.
One that utilizes the maf housing on the stock box.
Tubing that goes through like the AEM (I know Alzorz has done this and I think Team has as well)

I am just looking for some advice to set this up properly.

From my observations you would start by to taking out the stock box and intake.

Get 3.5" tubing roughly 24 inches long with a 90 degree tube just like the AEM intake.

Take out the screens from the stock box. (this is where i think i can just unscrew it from the stock box?)

Then K&N RU-3130 ( cone filter but i saw some where someone used an oval one because he didn't want it resting on the crash bar.)

I don't know if i have to cut the MAF housing on the stock into to get the screens and MAF mount off.

Also i don't know what to do with the stuff on the back of the stock intake.

So any other advice or hindsight would be helpful also correct me if i have something wrong

whats wrong with AEM? I would just get that instead of trying to copy it

 

that was my thoughts. It will be cheaper if your time is worth nothing to you.

 

cheaper.. considering i already have loads of feedback and i think the most someone said was like 120 and an amazing extra 20 mins to go to the store to get the parts instead of waiting on aem for 300$... also the aem one is really low and would be no fun in the winter... instead of hating why not appreciate something different... Plus why spend that money while i can break this one down and use it on my turbo build??????

Ok it may be cheap but this is the set up Team uses for his racing rx8, so there is really no reason for me to comment about anything else...

You can even modify an AEM filter to sit higher or "vertical" if winter scares you.
However using the stock maf tube and accordion kills isn't too smart unless rules dictate that it must be retained.
Add to your 120$ the cost of a 3.375" maf tube, a couple more couplers (lol), weld-in or bolt-in nipples and you're closer to the 290\300$ of an AEM intake than you would think

There's nothing wrong in building stuff at home, just try to focus on useful stuff where to invest your resources!

 

Im not hating on something different have you seen my car? You keep saying you have feedback and how others have done this then thry to defend being different? I was stating exactly what bse50 explained hell i used part of my AEM on my turbo build because it was damn near the same cost and saved some headache. Also i have a blow through set up so that should tell you how it worked out.

 

haha, whos got that picture from awhile ago of the guy that made the dual intake out of pvc pipe and two autozone cone filters?

Our engines are tricky, throw off the air intake levels and youll start having issues from what ive found. But, if you want to use the stock, you can take the walls out, add a GOOD cone filter that fits in there, and even chop out the top of the box and replace it with a piece of plexiglass. Thats about as far as I would go, I had that when I first started modding my car and didnt run into any problems.

 

Here is my stuff for future reference.





~24" long 3.5" ID aluminum tubing ($23), 90 degree elbow($23), RU-3130 K&N filter ($30), couplers($6), oem screens, oem maf tube.

- Sits on top of the crash bar and retains the factory "splash guard" and as such is stx legal.
- Reuses both OEM screens, so my idle is rock solid.
- Sounds great.
- Cost me ~$90 to make.

 

Good Job!!! Thats excatly what I did on my previous car, BUT it was '98 Mitsubishi , I would prefer to get brand name for my RX8 but still great job!

I actually did my own intake about two weeks ago and haven't run into any problems (as of yet) I have read (rx8club) that the screens are specifically there to allow the flow of air to become consistent and reduce idle roughness.. I went with a gamble and did not put them into my tube.. (laziness).. I have had no such issue yet and honestly couldnt be happier.. total cost.. under $100 and no more than 2 hours of my weekend time.. would post pics but laziness is at me again.. good luck to others wanting to try

 

Without searching this may be wrong but from what I remember the screens make the incoming air smoother and reduces swirling(I think?) which allows the MAF to get a better and more consistent reading. Sounds like something to keep to me.

 

Yeah thats what I thought also you need the screens to create a steady flow down the tubing, if the screens aren't there i believe there was some people that reported a CEL came up. That was actually going to be my question to Al if he installed the screens a certain way so he didnt get a CEL?
