Cobb AP vs. MoTec
Ok, so I've done a search for both of these units (specifically the MoTec M2R) and I'm currently trying to read throught the 203 pages for the Cobb AP thread.
Here's my question. which system would serve me better and WHY, Cobb AP or MoTec M2R? I am slowly building my 8 into a dedicated track car and eventually full race car. The rules of our series are liberal so that is not an issue. I've been around rotaries for a long time but always in a carbureted car (we have recently run a Eprod car and a PP tube frame car). The ultimate goal is to somewhat approximate the koni Challenge ST cars in way of engine mods. The car will stay N/A. Are the MoTec features more than I need, I realize there is not much power to be realized with the reny but I am open to any naturally aspirated mods that will get me there in terms of management.
Any sugestions here? I would prefer first hand experience but will take whatever I can get.

I won't say that money in no object but if there was a night and day difference between the two it might sway me more. Anyone know how much hp the Star Mazda cars make and what if any mods they use besides open exhaust and MoTec?
The Motec does what is needed to run the engine at max output
Stock PCM does what it can to make the car run with the BECT EMISSIONS at varying output.
The Stock PCM does a LOT of crap the car doesn't need to do in a racecar...so there is a lot of redundant crap going on..Motec is all speed to do what it does best.

you have a dedicated tuner with experience with the motec? go for it. you can play with the tuning more as dan mentioned above- also do it in real time per different fuels etc without the worry of running into the flash limit . i know of a couple of OE PCMs that have hit the flash limit and are no longer tunable.
plus you get data logging with the M2r keep traction control, have boost control if you want it later, tuning is "simple", closed loop control over the entire rpm range etc etc etc

Some of the Koni challange cars are already running the accessport. It's going to provide all the controls you need provided you have someone with the right tuning experience to run it. If the car is staying NA it would mean not having to deal with the installation and operation of a stand alone and reduced cost of equipment.
I can't see it getting much better than using the stock PCM as a platform. I'm not familiar with the details of Motec's various products but I do know their stuff will work in just about everything.
The question comes down to the capabilities of the two systems. IMO the accessport gives you pretty detailed control over the vehicle while having to surrender some functions to the PCM.
I say give the accessport a crack before considering the Motec. You'll be out much less money and might have a great result.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I think I'm leaning towards the Cobb. With the money I save I can get a nice Aim Sports Data Aquisition setup and perhaps improve more from the driving perspective.
My biggest issue was whether or not the AP can make as much hp as the MoTec. If the MoTec is only marginally better, and no one has been able to define "marginally", then it is probably not worth it for me.

There are things you can do with a standalone like a Motec that you can never do on a reflashed PCM (without buying extra stuff), such as two-step, nitrous control, fully adjustable onboard boost control, and a shitload of loggable inputs (EGT and backpressure sensors etc). But does that make the Motec "better" ? It all comes down to what you are trying to do with it. There is no point in buying a really expensive system when you are not going to use its features. And there is something to be said for OEM driveability and throttle response.
As MM said, generally speaking there should be no difference in power between an optimally tuned factory PCM and a standalone. It's just that you are not going to easily be able to throw 1680cc injectors on a factory PCM or something like that.
