seriously, if your not going to be pushing quite a bit more powr then stock then it really is just a little much for a street car with stock power. I had a stage one in my RX-7 and I loved it, I had a stage two i it, that was fine as well. when I turned the RX-7 into a drag car I put a stage 3 in it (all of these were clutch masters by the way) which I never really got to use other then the moving the car out of the driveway, from what little I used it, it was a little harsh. I pulled the stage 3 out and went with what you would consider a stage.... 6???? I guess. (if I remember right) it was a sold hub 4 puck clutch. again I didnt REALLY get to use this clutch, but what little I did use it, It was more of an on off switch. :) it was awsome (for a race car). I loved the way it felt!!! my biggest thing is I dont see why so many RX-8 guys put these big bad clutches in their cars when they are not pushing much power. the stock clutch really is a nice clutch. I had the RB flash, the ultra light pulleys, the ultra light flywheel, intakes... blah blah blah. I pushed 201 on the dyno (and that was before the RB flash). I have beat the hell out of my clutch, done many of many of auto crosses, multiple burnouts, and the factory clutch still works like a champ, with all of that, I have never once had a clutch slipage issue. In fact I had 4th gear problems which required me to pull the tranny out (to put the car back to stock before going to the dealer) and the factory clutch looked like it was new. I was VERY impressed with it. If your looking for more of a sporty feel, ok, I can see that. I myself like the sporty feel. the only reason I would change the clutch is for the feel. but a stage 3 I think just becomes overkill. even a stage 2 is over kill on an RX-8 that is not boosted or running a nitrous system. .... just my.02 :) Reason I ask is because I saw sites talking about clutches. They did mention that Kevlar last longer than Organic/Ceramic base clutches. can withstand higher temp. but of course its going to be *harsh* compare to the Organic/Ceramic base clutches. Then it comes to *price*, the Stage 3 clutch, like I said, cost 410, too bad the guy dont have it in stock Clutch Master will have to drop ship it to me(if I buy it), or else I can save the 25 bux shipping. Stock Clutch cost almost 400. and Im already done with ACT HD clutch(I have it installed, but dont really like it, want to try something else) I have the FEED big clutch release sitting in my room collecting dust, it should be able to balance *some* of the extra weight that any heavier clutch gives me. I could of go with what Takahashi has, I think its called OG something 250 Clutch, its has higher clamp load than stock but its also lighter on the Foot. but its really troublesome for me to order it thats why I didnt go that route. I have no final conclusion yet ... still have some time to think :) |
Where have you seen the stock clutch for $400??!!
You can get it at a Mazda dealership for $300 usually, clutch disc, pressure plate, new throwout bearing, the works. Or just a new clutch disc (pending your pressure plate is still good) is only $135 or so, I think some of the online dealerships have it for a great price. |
well... its really not a big deal. Like said, I like the feel of the race clutches, so just for the feeling part of it, it would be cool. but its not like its "NEEDED". because its not. (I am not saying that YOU said it was needed, I am just stating a fact) :)
anyways, let me knwo what you decide to go with, As long as its a sprung hub you should be fine. :) it still a street disk at that point. |

If the clutch lasts longer it is harder material and will be putting more wear on the flywheel contact area.
If the wear ring goes down on the flywheel it will have a similar feeling as a worn clutch. The centerforce clutch from what I have heard will last the life of the car. It has patented technology with the weights that prevent chatter, lower pedal feel and give balance to the clutch assembly. That is why I went that route. |
just dropped off Clutchmaster stage1/Fidanza flywheel at the dealership.. they have my car apart from installing a new tranny and said i needed a new clutch.. can't wait to get it back.. i miss my 8.. boo hoo..

Wasnt fidanza supposed to have a clutch with the flywheel out by now? I remember seeing a vid online at a show where they said they would be releasing one of their lightweight clutches for the RX...this was early last year...

Clutchnet sent me a clutch disc with Fiber Carbon on one side (Stage 1) and OEM Raybestos on the other. I immediately emailed Clutchnet and this is the email I was sent,
Dear Clutchnet, I ordered 57604Y Fiber Carbon clutch disc with sprung hub for Mazda RX-8. The clutch disc arrived defective, one side was Fiber Carbon and the other side was Raybestos OEM lining. I attached some pictures. Please call me ASAP. My car is apart for clutch replacement, and I need to get a non-defective disc ASAP Slick8 ... Slick8, This is not defective disc. That's the way it usually comes, unless requested otherwise. When you put fiber both sides it might chatter a lot. Let me know.
