Thumbs up Borla Exhaust System Defect!!*Solution*

As some of you may know the "Borla Exhaust System" for the Mazda Rx8 sometimes has a rattle in either the left or right tip and if u closely inspect the bottom of the tips, They contain holes and when their cut the metal from the hole is sometimes stuck and you will have a metal rattle and it sounds like something is stuck inside. So what i did was i took a drill bit just slightly larger then the hole and i drilled it wider. The metal piece came out after a drive down the block and now my exhaust idles fine and it sounds immaculate while driving and waiting. No Rattle... Now for the Heat shield rattle.

Well lemme know if this was useful to anybody

Later,
Semiazas

Mine gets a little rattle and i heard its due to my bushing with something when their under heat or something i was wondering do you have information or could you maybe know how to fix that. After driving for a period of time, When i make a right turn my car will squeak or rattle only while turning right and i believe its the exhaust and also sometimes at 3-4k RPMS ill have a rattle sounds like a heatshield issue

well like i said i would check the hangars and it's very possible that the heat shield over the mufflers are rubbing....when making a right??? well turnign should not cause the exhaust ot rattle unelss it's bumpy and rattling....also check at the cat where it's hooked up to make sure that it's tight and the springs are not vibrating some causing a rattle that happend to me also

i bought the car used. Its an 2004 so i don't think they will cover it for me still but its possible ill contact them and see if they can give me more information on the issue and see what could be causing it. I did read something about a Defect and that borla was Replacing exhausts but im not sure if mine falls into that category seeing as how i drilled the hole a little bigger on the bottom of the tip...not that it should effect anything but manufacturers would love to use that as an excuse as why not to replace the whole system for me...you know?

only the original owner gets a warranty.

also there are at least two versions of the borla. the first one had a heat shield problem with rubbing/hitting on one side.

if you're the original owner, you can get borla to give you a new one. you'll need the receipt.

if you're not the original owner or don't have the receipt, you can search for the old threads where we discussed this issue.. I don't recall if there was anything you can do besides bending back the shield so it doesn't hit.

For what it's worth, I bought one new in 2008 so it was after they fixed any heat shield issues. However, it developed the rattling from the exhaust tip issue. sounded terrible during idle and up until about 5k rpm.

I called them up and they are sending me another one no detailed questioning or anything. Just needed to email them a copy of my original receipt. Very impressed. Seriously they have an amazing ("million mile") warranty, and they've got a customer for life.

i bought mine from some internet company. just keep your invoice (I got a PDF from the retailer, and i just forwrded that to them.)

I would just call them rather than emailing. They are VERY friendly. Just be friendly to them and they will be nice to you....

Mine rattled around the first hanger. Took a very large wrench and bent the hanger out a bit and no more rattle.
