Thinking about purchasing one but I have heard how some intakes made for the RX8 may actually make your RX8 lose power...so you have to make sure you make the right choice. I have been on he K&N website and they guarentee that their intake will increase horsepower. I have also seen some videos on youtube and I personally think this intake sounds great.

Would love to know if any of you guys are currently using,or have used, this intake...and if so what were your results ?? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

 

I'm not sure if K&N sells their version 1 intake anymore, but their version 2 intake fixed their issues. It's still a short air ram though, which takes in hot air.

The one in those links is the only one I see going for sale on ebay so I'm guessing its version 2 ?..and yea I know short rams suck in hot air because of their close location to engine but I'm considering this intake since it has a heat shield. Don't know if this "heat shield" would make much of a difference tho

 

i don't have that specific model or brand, im running takeda short ram intake which is basic the same set up but different shape of filter,it does suck hot air but the stock box had a tube that takes cold air from the bumper in to the filter,and living in seattle there's plenty of cold air i've had it for two weeks now and since the moment i installed i felt the difference on the lower RPMs it pulls a little harder and smoother and the sound is just great !!! i've had a couple of comments on it

Rule of thumb for intakes. Either get AEM, MS, RB, or leave it stock.

With stock have you removed the fins? replaced with k&n filter? You can also hook up the RB duct wuth a little work.

I have the k&n V2 intake and it does suck in hot air but I paired it to the racing beat air duct and its a whole lot better!

 

Well I have the version 2 and I didn't notice any performance difference (positive or negative)but the sound is great that's y I got! Plus it looks great when u open the hood people come and look with amazment lol

 

do you know the difference between the version 1 and 2 ? I'm bidding on a typhoon on ebay but I'm trying to figure out what version it is lol....I wanna make sure its not version 1

You'll never notice that with any intake or exhaust system. The gain or loss is extremely minimal.

 

With just the intake no but with the RB air duct it just feels like it breathes easyer if that makes sence, so the butt dyno says it does make a little more in the mid range and on the top end. And it will hide the nitrous module very well if you ever go that route.

 

I'm not sure exactly what the difference is between the version 1 and version 2 but I kno there's 2 different models one for A/T and M/T maybe that's it checking the links I don't see a difference Though

 

Look at the links again. The first one is a wide flatter filter, the second is a circular cone inside the enclosure.

The heatshield provides some protection...until your engine warms up. Most intakes, short air or CAI, will take in cold air while the car is driving forward. The CAI provides guaranteed cold air since it is in front of the radiator. Short air rams provide cold air only when it is pushed in through that hole where the oem intake was. During stop and go traffic, all you will get with a short air ram is hot air regardless of a heat shield.

 

While I don't believe K&N's quality is bad, their design on the typhoon is not well suited for the RX8. There are two major problems with this intake.

First, the short ram design pulls hot engine air into the intake. Hot air is less dense than cold air and thus produces less power. If you happen to live in warmer climates the effect is even worse. I had the typhoon 2 for about 2 years and 130 degree intake temps were not usual. I've seen them as high as 190 degrees at idle.

Second, the intake uses a larger tube diameter than stock. The idea is to fool the MAF into running leaner and producing more power. The problem is the RX8 PCM can account for this and will adjust the fuel delivery thus negating any benefits from the larger tube. The real issue occurs when you reset the PCM by unplugging the battery. The car won't be able to stay running at idle until it adjusts fuel trims. I usually saw about +19% fuel trims with that intake.

Currently the RacingBeat intake and the AEM utilize the stock MAF tubing size and thus don't mess with your fuel trims. Both intakes pull cold air from outside the motor as well.

I have K&N v2 its loud. You can feel it at mid range and people have said is sounds like vtech kicked it lol wtf

 

I just got my K&N intake two weeks ago. Have version number two! As for performance i find it smoother in the low end. But got it for the sound of it. Its like a sleeper. At low revs no real noice at all, but when in higher RPM sound is lovely. My girl loves it when i give it on the gas and the car screams for air lol! I love it no complaints! Good luck!

Becareful with the fins, I heard some dealerships will void your warranty for altering OEM parts. Thats why when my engine failed, put the fins back before i brought it over to the dealership.

Intakes virtually do nothing for our car, but if you do want to get one I would get a true CAI, which like Ross said, AEM, MS, RB or SR motorsports but your pocket will be light as hell after the purchase. I would say just drop in a K&N filter or even a green filter

I had the K&N Typhoon on my vehicle when I purchased it.....and I have been debating if I want to spend the 300 dollars to replace it for an AEM CAI....so thats what I would get if I were you

 

switched from kn typhoon to AEM. i got the kN for free due to a shipping error with the company, so i just kept it.. heard some negative feedbacks, so i traded it for an AEM and haven't looked back. Plus the AEM looks nicer in the engine bay =)
