open it up and you'll see.. it's just two plastic pieces that's supposed to direct the air, but people have claimed more gains with them off.. I don't buy it, since no one has anything to back it up, but it can't hurt to do. might as well get a k&n drop in filter and a rb duct while you're at it

^ +1. Do a search on "intake box mod" in the DIY section. I removed two plastic walls and one of the two mesh screens. I didn't notice any difference in power. Intake sound is sightly louder but it is hard to notice (it is somewhat noticeable if you listen and compare really hard when cruising ~3500 rpm). One thing I know for sure is it took away most of the jerkiness I get when in gear under 2k RPM in first and second, so much that I didn't feel the car idling low and stalled twice the first day I drove with the intake mod.

Thats because it doesnt provide any gains. It's just another step in allowing the stock air box to receive as much cold air as possible. Like I said OP, Remove fins, K&N filter, RB duct. Everything else is bling.

The primary thing to keep in mind is the primary method of intakes increasing power will not work on the RX8 due to the PCM adjusting fuel trims. Either way, there are many other modifications which have been shown to give power gains and increased reliability that give you more bang for your buck.

If I had my stock intake system I'd probably have gone back to it by now. The AEM works fine for me so I don't have any reason to change it. If you're interested in reading about the RX8's stock intake system check it out here.

Simota intake ?

Was taking a look at the Simota intake for the RX8 http://simotausa.com/mazdarx8carbonfiberintakesystem.aspx

To me the design looks pretty good. What do you guys think ? It also sounds pretty cool...heres a youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCk4mxiVmOg

and a comparison of stock vs simota http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxOHy_Pth3A

Thinking about purchasing one and trying it out. Any of you have experience with this exact model ?

I have the K&N Typhoon II and to be honest I feel no difference... and theres barely a sound difference. I've heard great things about the RB revi intake so I would definitely stick to that. Honestly? KN is more of a waste... 300+ dollars on something that doesn't do much for the rotary..
If you're really looking for performance and sound then forget the intake, I'd go with the AP midpipe. Just my two cents..

May be a nice price, but don't use it. I bought my car with the same intake already on it, and I even asked for the stock one but he said he threw it away.

Anyways, since having it, I would consistently get lean codes, and eventually blew my cat and coils. Makes my car run like crap, luckily I just bought a Mazdaspeed one. But take from my own experience, it may sound loud and that price may be nice, but I would highly recommend NOT installing it.

EDIT: also, you're plexiglass idea won't really help. The design of the intake sucks, and like it's been said here, no consideration was taken in straightening out the air flow. It's a crappy intake, and I highly doubt any home mod can help it become better. Just my suggestion from my own experience with it.

Well here's the thing - the sound is nice, and people obviously don't have problems right away. Hell some may not have problems for a long time, so they think. But regardless, that doesn't change the fact that the intake sucks in hot air, and has no consideration for the maf sensor.

I'm just telling you from personal experience and facts alone that this intake is horrible. I like the sound of it, but I can easily tell that it makes my car run rough at idle and has caused me problems. Take it from all the guys here who know their stuff, I wouldn't use it.

Feel free to PM me if you wanna talk more about it
