VIR Grand Course June 16-17 With MazdaDrivers.com

Y'all into it?

It conflicts with NASA Rockingham but it's the same driving time to get there and the Grand Course is the King Daddy:

- Drive the Longest Road Course in America, 4.2 miles, 34+ turns

- Over 500' in elevation changes over the entire course

According to most I have talked to: "Will reset whatever idea you have of what you favorite track is"

I am signing-up as soon as the registration opens: www.mazdadrivers.com

It's on Father's day weekend so I guess Daddy gets to do what Daddy wants right?

If work/family does not get in the way I am definitely doing it.

That page says "Registration by Friday (9th)" .... does that mean they are starting the registration today?

Everyone who has that weekend free should definately try and make it. Especially if you've never been to VIR before!

The Grand Course is a LOT of fun, with all of the full course (minus a few hundred feet of the back straight) and some added thrilling corners which are very interesting.

Just don't let yourself get intimidated by the length and # of corners, and you'll have the most fun of your driving career. Gauranteed.

As it stands right now, I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it or not. I may be going to the Rockingham event with NASA instead (depends on which one my father wants to go to).

I'll be there. ( I believe registration is only open now for their event at Summit Point. )

Torque and L8- Will be good to see y'all up my way! The Grand Course is awesome- you will love VIR. But alas, it is no longer the longest track in N. America (or perhaps the Western Hemisphere). Miller Motorsports Park in Utah now claims that title.

PS- The SunTrust racer will be at VIR in April for the Rolex Series -- Rx8's are competing in GT class. If anyone is coming up for that, let me know. -Howard

Camping depends on whether or not the club spends the extra $$$ to allow it. Usually clubs will tell you somewhere on the website as to whether or not it will be allowed. If you can't find it on the website (I can't), I imagine if you e-mail them they will let you know.

As far as convertibles go, VIR is usually extremely strict. I'm trying to think of events where I've seen convertibles without roll bars on track, and the only club that comes to mind is the Ferrari Club, and even then the run group is no-passing, "speed limited." My best bet would be that for him to drive it, he'll need a pretty big roll bar with plenty of clearance between the line from the bar to the windshield and his helmet. And I hope he already has arm restraints.

Having run with MazdaDrivers for the past 2 years, I can give you exact answers

1. NO CAMPING allowed on VIR grounds overnight. However, they do have a very nice Lodge on-site, it's literally right next to the Snakes turn heading up to Uphill Esses. IIRC it's $100 a night at the VIR Lodge.

2. a roll cage is not needed; however, a full function rollbar IS REQUIRED for convertibles, good luck with your friend installing a rollbar on his S2K, i heard it's quite expensive

mazdadrivers may go by the "broomstick rule" for S2k's- i.e.- is there at least a broomstick's-width of clearance from the top of the helmet to the top of the rollbar. ..and remember if you require an instructor (and he's tall) that might disqualify you too. contact Dave Nugent at mazdadrivers.com to be sure.

Also- for you GA and SC and TN guys from CMP last year- I'll make good on my promise to put you up for a night or two here in Chapel Hill, if you'd like. My house is about an hour and 20 minutes from VIR.
