Got my VIN and Est. Build date
I called my dealer this morning and he had good news.
VIN number JM1FE17N740100606
Est. Build date 5-15-2003
He was unsure about the "Estimated" part of the build date, but did say that I am getting one of their two that they will receive in the first batch.

The dealer had never seen a build date that said "Estimated". He did say that on all other non-RX-8 orders, Mazda is really good about posting build and expected delivery dates.
From what we can gather, it does look like it was built last week.
He also confirmed that he could not add the NAV to the order, again we assume because it has been built.

Build date = production initiation
the Build date is generally the start of production (at least until we learn something otherwise). The last official word I've read from Mazda was US production was to start 5/12 and it seems some may be in production - but - in theory (and so much of this is just that) - the preorder buyers were to get an email telling them the VIN 'before' production actually commenced on their individual car. Trust me, if anyone had received that letter [on this forum] we'd ALL know about it. another generality : once production begins, the ETA to the buyer's dealer is estimated to be between 6 weeks and 12 weeks - again all theory so far.

i just called mazdausa and the guy i spoke to didn't know when production was "going to start" for the u.s. but said to expect the emails to start "sometime in june". i don't like that answer so in a little while i'm going to call again and see if i get a different answer from a different person.

Had to comment on your dealer. That is where I bought my 1985 RX-7 while stationed at Patrick AFB. I ordered the car in July/August and it arrived in September. It was the last first generation RX-7 they received. Drove off the lot on September 9, 1985.
TREKN7 has been my only car since that day; now with 261,369 miles as of tonight. While living there, Boniface service always treated me well. Hope you have the same experience.

Glad to hear of your good experience. I'll pass that on to my brother who is a minority owner. It is good to have a close relative in the business. It also helps in getting straight information instead of the salesman bs. The guys at the dealership are already giving my brother grief about my delivery and prep demands as discussed in another thread.
I will be having it serviced, if it ever needs it, in Daytona at Lynch Imports. They do Mazda, VW, BMW.
They also got me tickets to the Revit Up event next weekend in Miami, FL. I suggest to all RX-8 preorders to contact your dealer and get the VIP passes to the Revit Up events. It is a great chance to get upclose and personal with the RX-8, even though it is a pre-production model, especially since delivery dates on our 8's have slipped from May.

My Call to Mazda USA
zoom44 - I called just a few minutes ago. Answer I got is that they expect them in to the dealers in July; the first units go to the preorders (from January orders); production is to start sometime this month -assumed she meant later this month. Brochures are on the way to the dealers and should be at most dealers next month (June).

This is what I got from Ashley at rx8orders. It took her a few days to confirm if US production had begun, but she did confirm it. Shortly there after, I received my VIN number from my dealer.
"In response to your e-mail request, mass publication for the RX-8 brochures has just finished. We should shortly have enough brochures in stock to begin fulfilling requests. I've ensured your name is on the list; rest assured that you will be mailed an RX-8 brochure just as soon as inventory is complete.
Also, I can officially confirm RX-8 production did indeed begin on May 12, 2003.
Hope this helps! "

Early Cars
It looks like dealers are getting VIN numbers for cars with automatic transmissions. I don't know why but that is what appears to be happening. Go figure??

Email from Mazda
You may recall that we were to receive an email from Mazda once they had the VIN number that would allow you to track your car. Did you receive any such email? If not, you may want to call Mazda and ask because you will be able to track the progress of your car on-line.

They told me that Mazda was not going to allow us to track the status of our pre-orders on-line:
From rx8orders:
" There is currently no tracking site for your order nor are there any plans to provide this. Rather, status updates will be automatically sent to you at several steps of the pre-order process. Typically within thirty days of placing your order, you will receive the first confirmation (your confirmation may take longer if your dealership has entered your e-mail address AFTER the order was initially placed). Information within each subsequent automated update will advise you when to expect your next status update!"
of course, I've never received any e-mail from Mazda concerning my pre-order. My dealer called me with my VIN #.

E-mails from Mazda
From the Mazda North America e-mail to all dealers
dated 4/28/03
June-July: US pre-sell customers receive six status e-mails directly from Mazda: when their car is placed in the build-stream, when a VIN is assigned, when car is built, when car is shipped, when car arrives in US and when car arrives at assigned dealership.
Looks like e-mails wont start untill next month. By that point many
of our cars will allready have been built. As said above there will not be any way to track orders on Mazda web site. Many of us may not get a e-mail until our cars are ready to be shipped.
Is this any way to run a customer notification program?

it'd be great if they would have at least sent a "confirmation" e-mail stating that they recieved your e-mail address into the system accurately. I don't believe they have mine. oh well. i just want the car and I wants the info.
i guess this is all a learning game for Mazda and the pre-order program, hopefully they have learned a lot.

Called my dealer today and he had the VIN with a "TBD" date of production. He assured me, " we expect your car to be in by the end of June by the latest." Right.
Nordic Green, 6 spd, pre-ordered Jan. 15
No e-mail from Mazda about the VIN or production yet.

Great news! The factory has accepted and confirmed your order for your all-new 2004 Mazda RX-8--a sports car like no other. Next, the factory will assign your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and begin production on your Mazda RX-8. We will send you a notification email with the VIN when that occurs--sometime in the next 1-3 months
Note the 1 to 3 months
Today Mazda told me it was :
3 to 4 months
bottom line no emails...after your car is delivered look in the glove box for your email......Am I Happy?......
