Today was a bad day. My car was driving fine all day until I was on my way home. A little more than a mile away from my house, my car starts to sputter like its misfiring when I go past half throttle. So I left off the gas some but it eventually starts to sputter again until I can't even touch the pedal. So then I'm coasting in neutral when the car just dies so I pull into an empty lot. I try to start her up but the car sounds horrible and barely worked hard enough to stay on. So I let it cool off for a few hrs. I come back and it starts but it sounds like ****. I get the car home but now I need to make a date with mazda.

that sucks, sounds like the problems you were having before and with the problem you just stated it might be compression and time for a new engine. you are still under warranty period right?

Dude this time it really has me scared. I'm still under warranty but I can't necessarily return my car to stock. I don't have a spare cat lying around or a factory exhaust. My car came with neither of the two. So wish me luck. Ill keep everyone updated. O my did stick was smelling like gas when I pulled it out. idk what that means.

I was hoping to get out to Sebring, but I don't have an opportunity that weekend.

I'll definitely get out there at some point though!

they shouldnt give you much crap if you put a factory cat and intake. those are two of the most crucial things that they give you problems about. and gas in oil = bad and means new engine time most likely

The intake is not necessary...just get a used CAT from a wrecked Rx8 and that's all you need. That should be enough. They only gave me **** with the CAT and ignition.

Ah, dammit Xero, I missed your post. I would have gone. :p I just started working and I've kind of destroyed my weekends. 4pm - 2am Friday and Saturday.

i could get a cobb and lean out the car a little more so im not running so rich and get rid of a lot of the smell...but i already have the cat sitting in my garage. so obviously you see which route is cheaper..

So what are the real benefits of going cat-less? I'm finally getting to the point that I want to start modifying, and that seems to be a very early mod or most people.

the catalytic converter is naturally restrictive. with no cat, the engine can push the exhaust gases out much more easily. This gives a small hp gain plus kickass flames when it is hot enough. My only suggestion on buying a midpipe is racing beat or BHR. BHR is godly and never changes but expensive. racing beat sounds great but the packing burns out after awhile (which is what's happening to me).

wait, wait. you are saying if I take out the cat, then my car its going to push fire out of the exhaust that you can actually see. now my question is... is that going to turn the CEL on?

the flames are due to the car naturally running rich so unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust. part of the smell you get when not having a cat is from those unburnt gases (there are other reasons as well). the CEL is because the second oxygen sensor in the cars exhaust stream red-flags to the computer (pcm) that the cat is below efficiency threshold (no **** because its no longer there).
