After months of exhaustive development and testing, Racing Beat announces the introduction of the REVi Intake System for the RX-8 application. Designed to offer performance improvements without sacrificing drivability, the Racing Beat intake system is the final result of hundreds of hours of dyno test sessions and on-road testing.

The major components of the REVi Intake System include: an OEM style air box assembly, custom-designed K&N air filter unit, aluminum mass air flow sensor tube, and a tuned-length air inlet horn. Unlike the vast majority of the aftermarket intake systems on the market, the Racing Beat intake system retains one of the important mesh screens to aid with the even distribution of airflow across the mass air sensor. The inclusion of this screen minimizes the possibility of “rough idle” issues that may occur if both stock screens are eliminated.

Working with the design team at K&N Engineering, a high capacity air filter was developed that allowed us to position a tuned-length intake horn inside the filter body. This filter design allowed us to fine-tune the length of the air horn to maximize the performance potential. We have noted that most aftermarket intake systems for the RX-8 incorporate a large air filter, which is then connected to the intake manifold with a length of plastic or metal tubing. In many cases, the size of the filter that has been selected will dictate the length of tubing required, severely limiting the critical tuning importance of the air intake tube!

The REVi intake system addresses one of the most common complaints that we hear regarding aftermarket intakes for the RX-8 – extremely loud intake noise! Although a simple unshielded “tube-and-filter” intake system may produce respectable top end power, the noise levels that are produced are unbearably loud. During initial testing with one of more popular aftermarket units, we recorded a full-throttle sound level reading of over 90 db inside the car, with the windows rolled up! Compared to the stock sound level, we believe that you will soon tire of this type of “rocket-racer” intake buzz. The REVi intake produces a much more modest intake sound with only a 2-3 db increase over the stock system. As described on by one of our prototype test volunteers, “This intake is definitely louder than the factory unit, but not unreasonably so. It actually sounds deep and pretty darn good.”

Why won't this work for the auto?

 

I'm excited to see their gains...Also, I'd make the top of the box plexiglass/lexan to show off the cool filter design

I'm still unsure why would people buy a $300 intake for 2-3 HP gain which is practically undetectable while driving. Just because of the sound? Actually, I prefer the quiet stock box then. Just to show off the "cool" intake? Come on...
Then again, same is true for all the aftermarket exhausts... over five hundred dollars for 2 HP gain, deeper sound and more attractive exhaust tips - that's not a justified expense for me. Still, so many people are doing this - so what do I know?

 

...but we don't know the gain yet. It could be 10-15hp gain; Below Peak.

 

If that's the case, I would understand. Guess we just have to wait and see.

As you stated, different people have different preferences and budgets. Someone who makes minimum wage would think long and hard before spending $300, while a multi-millionaire wouldn't even think twice. Most of us are somewhere in-between.

Well, I see your point and still - while I do have a decent income, I would still hesitate spending that much money for negligible gains...

 

Right - It would be akin to spending $300 painting one's existing intake box...yeah, might be cool...but it doesn't really 'do' anything to help...

I'm with ya...If the intake can't provide repeatable, measurable gains worth $320 + shipping, I'd rather keep what I have.

 

Again, this is a case of personal preferences. I bought a Racing Beat exhaust because I love the sound, not because of any slight HP gain and definitely not because it weights more than stock. For me that $500 was a worthwhile "measurable" gain. Other people may not see it that way and that's why it's a personal preference balanced by budget.

has anyone put this on a AT yet?
can it work?

 

I emailed them about that mikeb--the response was that they haven't tested it on an A/T so they can't comment on how it responds; which is why they say M/T. Judging from the pics it should work as both of the intakes are the same on the A/T and M/T--from what I understand. I'll post the email verrbatim tomorrow as its on my work email.

does this mean for RX8 MT only?can i install it for my AT?

 

i don't see why it wouldn't work, not sure what kind of gains would occur but there's no obvious erason why it wouldn't work on an AT. i plan on getting one for mine someday, or maybe waiting for the cold air that's coming later (or so the rumor goes)
