garage vacuums

Does anyone have suggestions for vacuums that are most appropriate for car detailing? How much HP do I really need to get all the grit and grim out of the floor mats? And the road salt - MN uses so much salt and liquid spray that gets tracked into the car. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Just about any vac will work. I have an old Eureka Mighty Mite that I keep in the garage. It's small and easy to move around. The key is more what you do rather than what you do it with. I always vacuum to get the big stuff, then brush the carpet and/or mats to loosen up dried chunky mud, etc (salt in your case) then vacuum again. If really dirty, I use an upholstery cleaner, let it dry, then brush and vacuum again.
