I am looking for a camera mount for a DV movie camera. In my last car I used a mount attached to the harness bar. But in my RX-8 I am not going to use a roll bar or harness bar so I won't have anything to attach the mount to. I would use it for track events and possible autocross.

I have considered a bullet camera but I would really like to just mount the DV camera.

I have a Sticky Pod (the model w/ 4 suction cups) and it did not even budge one bit during an entire autocross. Just to appease the SCCA reps, I used 2 motorcycle tie downs, one end of the loop section going across the top of the car on the left and one done the same way on the right side and shut the other ends through the top part of the rear doors and then hooked them together inside of the car and tightened them up. I recommend the sticky pod. comes with a instructional cd too. :D

here ya go..... just cut off all but about a foot of the parts of the tie downs that hang down inside the car.

there's a DIY thread where someone mounted a bar attached to a couple of bolts in thr trunk and pokes through the pass through. I'm thinking of this setup when I'm able to track/autox my 8.

The 3 suction mount holds a DV camera nice and steady. Or... you can get a lipstick camera and secure the video camera someplace else and mount the lipstick camera anywhere.

I borrowed one of those a few times last year and will be buying my own in the next few weeks. I HIGHLY reccomend the bulletcam (aka lipstick). It has a FOV of 90° compared to a max of of about 45°-50° from most regular camcorders (regardless of format). The bulletcam is a lot smaller and lighter and should be more durable if it gets by a cone. A handy thing in the RX-8 if you use the bulletcam is that you can secure the recording device (in my case a MiniDV cam with a line in) in the console, and close the cover over it even with the wires coming out.

It's a big file at about 37 MB, but here's a video of an autocross run last year using the earlier "conecam" (which isn't quite as good as the newer bulletcam Randy's selling) that shows off my total lack of autocross skills. :D

There was a DIY of a camera mount running around last summer - basically what was done was that the poster used the "rotary holes" in the seatbacks as the mounting points - he cut a piece of plexiglas the shape of the metallic part of the rotary insert. Through these, he drilled holes and inserted 4" or so long stove bolts with wingnuts and lock washers to secure. To mount up the camera, he used a 4 foot-long length of box-section metal channel such as curtain rod channel or some other type of boxed metal "tube" He drilled holes in it to match the width of the distance between the bolts sticking out of the seats.

Then to mount that into the car, he simply slipped the bolts through the holes and tightened the wing nuts. this clamped the bar against the seatbacks - I think you'd want to pad the bar so it doesn't damage the seats.

To mount the camera, he bought long tripod bolt at a camera store, drilled through the rod in the center (90 degrees to the mounting bolts) and mounted up the camera on the tripod bolt. Voila! Camera mount.
