This is all Amazon/eBay cheap stuff that was readily available, keeping in the spirit of this build of doing it as cheaply as possible. $180 or so, I think.

no, that’s the current DSP evolution

I ran that other one way back in the day. In the very early days I ran the RB duct, but then it was disallowed later per the Miata radiator shroud clarification. I eventually reverted back to a custom box setup because the 4” tall x 6” wide oval opening in the front is less restriction than that extra length of 3.5” tubing with a filter having a small inlet radius. My box had a filter with a large air horn inlet. The alloy tube in the engine bay will heat sink easier too in an STX configuration. All imhe …

one of the other RX8s I bought this year has a Racing Beat intake box assembly that I plan to put up FS one of these days.

This was solely driven by opening up the back of the radiator to see if I get better cooling, FWIW. If it doesn't work, then oh well, back to stock airbox which works great.

yeah, that’s where the custom box comes into play.

if I had to do it all over again I’d just cut and bond one together out of dense foam insulation board from Home Depot/Lowes

Are you guys using aftermarket sensors to see oil/coolant temperatures? My AP is getting old and fragile, and I'm trying to decide if I want to still use the OBD or something more customized.

At some point I'll add oil sensors, but I'm just using the stock coolant temp sensor and logging it during autocross/on track. It holds a pretty stable 180-195 F on the street depending on traffic so I don't worry about it there.

Intake did nothing for coolant temps at autocross.. As I expected

I coned away 2nd in PAX/STX win and Amy pulled off 5th in STX. Lots of distractions with bad course workers not getting out of the way or grossly misplacing cones so we had some re-runs. It was tough to keep the Nankangs cool in those conditions with a lot of hot laps, but oh well! Amy keeps finding little things to improve and she's finding a ton of pace, I'm looking forward to cheering her on at nats!

My fastest coned run:

i am coming up to your region this weekend with my "STX-lite" car. it's an underprepped stock class car, just with 9" wide wheels. but i've been sweeping the class down here and want someone to keep me honest! looking forward to ripken; haven't autocrossed there in over 10 years.

Should be Simmons & Amy in the RX-8 getting ready for nats. Should be a fun battle!

I'll be in my Miata also getting ready for nats.

Got to see hufflepuff and check out his sweet street RX-8! Gave him a ride in my Miata too

Comparing Amy's and Simmons' runs was interesting, Amy made a ton of time up in the final corner just staying tighter. She ended up faster there than me which is awesome.

Amy's fastest, good for 4th in STX and 40th in PAX:

Simmons' fastest, good for 3rd in STX and 27th in PAX:

I ran at Ripken with BMC the day before. Didn't have video or data set up this time. Think I ended up 4th or 5th in PAX knowing I could have gained another .3s if I didn't suck at driving.

Looks like lots of STX action at your event and lots more faster drivers overall. Hope there are more opportunities for joint region events at this location.

What did you want to see? Data is in SoloStorm cloud if you want to look it over. Ken Roller was there in STX with Meramo too

It was nice to be humbled and given a reality check! STX in WDCR must be fairly soft this season (not dinging any of those folks, i just don't think their cars are prepped like the cars at this Philly event).

I will need to go check that out.

Mostly the run overlay of course to see deltas, g's, and such. Since there's video, I can relate data to real life inputs and not just "too much braking, turned too hard."

Data nerd stuff.

Ken is fast. My delta to him makes me sad.

There isn't much of an STX contingent in WDCR. And a lot of the faster drivers aren't running much with WDCR because Summit sucks for autocross. Philly / NNJR is kind of where it's at "locally" for autocross now.

i heard some rumors about a potential re-pave of that summit point washington venue. not sure the scope, like whether they'd get rid of some or all of the grass islands.

in the end... we're all driving on the same lot. maybe the surface isn't great, but it's mostly smooth and i wouldn't see where any one car is at a big disadvantage.

Supposedly Summit is planning to pave over the grass islands. I'll believe it when I see it.

I don't know what you're getting at with regard to your last sentence. I had responded to your comment about the STX competition in Philly / NNJR being stronger than in WDCR, and as I said I think that's true across all classes. A lot of the faster folks aren't going to Summit and have chosen to run with other clubs.

essentially, i was not understanding why people are choosing to go elsewhere. it is because of the lot/pavement quality? do they simply dislike the summit as a venue for other reasons? my point was only that everyone who shows up to compete at summit is on the same lot, so they all have to "deal" with the same pavement conditions.

coming from rallycross where the surface changes dramatically continuously over the day, i was sharing my view that pavement quality doesn't seem like a great factor to "keep them away" from summit. i'd like it if faster folks showed up. sad that the current venue is keeping them away for reasons i don't understand apparently.

I think what it comes down to is most of the faster folks are looking for courses that have elements they'd see at a National event (Tour / Prosolo / Nationals) and you can't get those courses at Summit. So they're choosing to go elsewhere. Ripken is maybe barely sufficient for that kind of course.

Ripken is definitely barely suitable. The last Philly course there was better than what we put together for this course, IMO, but still not super "nationals ready"

I think the last time I ran there was 2007 and back then we had the entire parking lot for paddock. Not the case now. So with half the lot available (and taking into account the "jump") there isn't much you can do.
