You only need a helmet, many clubs even have loaners. You do need to be a member, but you can buy a weekend membership for $15 to try it out.

That's the Northwestern Ohio Region, or NWOR. I've run with them a couple of times, and they put on good events. Here's their website. It'll be a while before we start autocrossing around here though.

Unless otherwise noted, the price for each event will be $20.00 for a SCCA Member and $30.00 for a non-member.
The $30.00 non-member fee will include the mandatory SCCA Temporary Weekend Membership.
There will be a form available at registration to fill out for this temporary membership. In order to expedite the registration process, please fill out the form prior to registering.
Non-members who pre-register at MyAutoEvents.com will still have to fill out the temporary membership form.
The SCCA Temporary Weekend Membership is good for one event weekend only. Non-members will have to fill out a membership form for each event attended.
However, there is a bright side to all of this:
If you submit one (1) temporary membership to the SCCA along with $60.00 or two (2) temporary memberships along with $45.00, you become a SCCA member. No more fuss!

Hope to see you at either venue, I know with NORA all rookies do get a coach to ride along with them and get coaching as well.

NWOR had an autocross school in Monroe, MI on something like the first weekend in May last year. I'm going to try to make some of their events this year. Maybe I'll see you there. I'll have the WWP that's covered in mud. I'm no pro, but I'd be happy to let you ride with me.
