One person reports:
I went to sema today, and I'm holding the brocure in my hand for these tires. They're called the Azenis RT-615, and that is exactly what they look like. They uses light weight nylon sidewalls instead of steel (like the old azenis sport), and the tread compound is not supposed to get greasy when they heat like the sport does. The tech rep was telling me that they can be mounted with the large blocks on the inside of the rear rims to help produce oversteer for drifting or race tuning. They are aysemetrical and non directional, so you can rotate them front to back and side to side, and the sidewall is supposed to be as stiff (if not more) as the sport.
These are indeed the Falkens that have been seen at SEMA.

Looks sweet if they are indeed as "grippy" as the originals. I know some are running the same size in Hoosier's with the stock suspension, but 275s on the front might be a problem with a lowered 8. With 2 inches drop there is barely clearence for the stock 225s on my 8. I might be able to fit the 245 or 255 if I raise the coilovers some. Now if they would only get them out on the market so we can play.....

Alex: A bit off topic but, have you tried 275's on the front of your STU car?

Not having 16" sizes is ***.
What about RX-7's, Civics, or any other cars that typically run 16's? A 205/40/16 would be too small for anything but a Miata, even when accounting for an intentional reduced rolling radius (for shorter gearing). Such a small tire wouldn't have a sufficient load rating for any car 2500lbs or more.
Yet they're making NINE variations for 18" wheels? Big wheels are heavy and clumsy- surely they could have substituted one of those 18" sizes for a 245/45/16 or the more popular 225/50/16.
What a downer. Looks like Kuhmo MX's from here on out...

I need to put stock in treadwear, I'm in ST class
I have no doubt that the 275 will fit on the front rim. The problem is that I plan on getting coilovers for next year and my budget doesn't allow me to "test" the fitment of the 275s on a lowered ride height. I will first test fit the back tires, then next time I need new ones I will have the Falkens to consider :D
...hopefully they will fit as I have had to reduce the traction in the rear by alignment and pressure to help rotate the car.

I just mean that comparing the treadwear number from tire to tire is very inexact as the manufacturers can set any number they like.

So if they have a passenger tire at 300 for a starting point, the Azenis at 200 is like a 160 to a 260 at another manufacturer. It's not that they can put whatever they want on the sidewall.
What would stop hoosier from putting 140 on theirs?

Alex: I was hoping you would be the go-to guy on testing the fit of 275s on a lowered car. Like you, I don't have the budget (or an understanding tire dealer) to test the "how low can you go with 275s" this year. I'm going to put 245s on the front this spring and see how much room is left after a 1.5" drop. The winter tire (225/50x17) and wheel (17x8/38mm) testing I did showed me that a 2" drop rubbed with that combination. I had to raise the car close to stock hieght to get rid of the rub.
Now if I can just find some cheap 17x8/50mm wheels.... :p

hmmm, that's interesting... The 225/50x17 is slightly (like .2 inches) taller than the 275/40x17, and then there is the 38mm offset.
Did they rub on the inside or outside? My guess would be inside.

If you stand on the drivers side, it rubbed on the liner by the fender lip at around the 10-11 o'clock position. I circled the area in the attached picture.

I really think we should be able to fit 255-265/40x17 with no problems if we don't get too crazy with the drop. Since it doesn't look like I'll have a set of 17" wheels by next season, I'm thinking of ordering a set of 18 inch 265's and trying them on and if they are too wide I'll move them to the back and order a set of 245's for the front. Low budgets can sure make a guy get creative....
