Correction: Data was skewed. 1:41 was possible (not 1:39).

Crossed the line first, dynoed 6whp over (131whp/141wtq) against a 125whp hard cap. Highest I've ever turned before on a Dynojet with SAE correction was 120whp. Car just doesn't have the parts on it to be capable of those numbers. Left a 5whp buffer to try and be safe. Got burned, with nothing I can do about it. Also had a call by the stewards that I didn't agree with that felt like a winnable appeal, but, due to the dyno stuff (completely unwinnable protest) it was pretty moot to drop the $100 appeal fee and such on. There were several that didn't have dyno issues, and several that did. Very frustrating.

Extreme high to pretty low right now. Esp fighting through the electrical issues that cropped back up (ECU failure mainly, but also a weird intermittent drop out that still persisted). Brian Welchel took an ECU off his street car to help me out, and Ed Bird took his kill switch off to let me borrow. I am forever greatful for that kind of help.

Will post my video and such once I play with (or give up on) traqmate data overlay - car was flat out QUICK all weekend in the heat. 1:50.XXX lap time almost anytime I asked for it, took several in a row to start to cook the tires a bit where it would regress to mere low 1:51s. Actual best of 1:50.5XX or .6XX against a theoretical best of 1:49.9XX. With an 18 or so lap race, I feel like a half second spread between actual and theory is damn good driving but I'll let y'all be the judge of that.

Setup:
1994 Mk2 NA 5-spd
2685lb min weight
stock suspension (no, really...) with TRD crash bolts, -3.0 camber with zero toe front, -1.8* camber with 0.50* total toe in rear
15x6 Millenia front wheels, Team Dyamics whatever-the-heck 15x7 rear wheels
205/50/15 and 225/45/15 Hoosier R6 tires
stock engine/power stuff except the following
- straight exhaust pipe after the stock functional cat
- EMS cold air intake (worth a whole 0.5-1.0whp, but also weight savings)
- 12* timing advance and pump 93 octane (from whatever station near the track)
- maybe something done to the borrowed stock computer I used but unlikely.

what size tires do you run Etzilon? 225? 245? curious because many say too wide a tire can be a slower tire. Those are great times you had, especially for the first time at RA!

Sorry to hear about your Dyno issues at Nationals. Hopefully NASA will have a better system in place soon involving GPS data etc.

Rear wheel dynos are just plain inconsistent as we all know too well. On some cars even just changing the gear used can make a 3-5% difference. Sucks.

Thanks! I used 225/45/17 Hankook Z214 C51. In hindsight, I should have bought a set of Hoosier R6.

Kbrewmr2 drove flawlessly and his consistency lap after lap is pretty amazing. It was exciting racing from the spectator's side.

All right.. Here are the numbers.

Official best: 1:42.6 (shows up on my data as 1:42.8)
Best rolling lap: 1:42.4 (right before going 4 off at T3)
Theoretical best lap: 1:40.9 (still WAY slower than the S2000 who took #1: 1:38.9)
Max lateral g force: 1.59
Max breaking g force: 1.46
Max RPM: 9,670 (oops!)

The RX8 did great: gas, oil and new brake pads... everything else was play.

Sounds like fun besides the whole dyno issue... we had the exact same thing happen over here with a mobile dynojet. It read WAY higher than all our local dynojets and pretty much everyone that got protested and taken to the dyno went over.

The one thing that I am disappointed about is the complete lack of live coverage of any kind for the event. That Racer Connect thing was a total joke. I would be mad to pay that much money for Nationals expecting Speedcast to be there and then have that happen. Almost makes me glad that I'm not going to West nationals...

view from P2 finisher in PTF; Cody Mason:

my view of start:

best lap of that race (and sorry for the go-pro tilting....)

still trying to get home PC better at editing video. May just spring for the full version of Race Render once I recover $$$ wise from Nationals :x

Ben Anderson took the PTE win in my RX-7. Was a good nearly flawless weekend with the car. We dynoed on sat and were right on the line. Not being a reclass i could simply add weight to deal with that flakey dyno. I didn't need to mess with anything else. My car did dyno 4hp over it's previous best dynojet SAE number of 170. The miata guys were pretty cranky all weekend dealing with a 30HP gap but we were 400lbs heavier on 205s and the car was super oversteer mode all weekend since i couldnt touch the sway bars. Disconnecting the rear would have fixed the handling problem but i didn't have the points to do it.

Did you dyno on Sunday post race?

Car looked great and pretty hooked up when you came by me. Always nice to see an FC in race trim

We did not Dyno post race sunday. We had been Dyno'd on sat. On, Sun, They had me take the entire intake apart to check for everything from the TB into the motor. They checked all six ports via scope to make sure it was fully stock port. All the casting marks were there, the rotor housings and plates are exactly as they come from Mazda. We were almost the last people to leave the track, we were the last car in the tech shed for 30 min. Then drove home to Minnesota.....fun.

I wish. RX-8 is sucking down too much money. I'll be bringing the Miata to Sevenstock though, at least that's a cheap event lol.

No kidding. My motor has dynoed anywhere from 204 to 211 hp on various dynos. I'm setting my max at 215. I hope that's sufficient. You never know.

Well... a bit of a disappointing weekend. Some not at fault minor contact with another racer put me out of the first qualifying race during the first lap. This resulted in a cascading effect that caused a poor grid position. The two Miatas that got first and second where very well suited to Sonoma Raceway and I just had no chance against them. I ended up 4th or 5th.

But I can't complain. I didn't wreck or anything. One Spec E30 guy crashed in the first qualifying race, spent all night fixing it, totaled his car in the second qualifying race, and then rented a car which he wrecked in the championship race!

More than anything else, he's consistent.

I hear ya. For me, Road Atlanta was an animal completely different than any track I had run before hence I was too cautions which costs time. Like you, my car went back shiny and curvy on all sides.

Dyno Readings

A word of warning for those of you who are on a Dyno reclass.

NASA is now dyno testing RX8s in 5th gear. At least in my region it was always done in 4th before. The rules do specify that testing should be done in the 1:1 ratio gear, so 5th is the correct gear for the RX8.

On both my RX8 and a competitors testing in 5th rather than 4th caused a 7hp gain at the rear wheels. This resulted in a DQ.

So... if your dyno reclass what not done in 5th gear you might want to get tested again!

Just a heads up!

Rulebook from 2013 and 2014 were specific about using the gear that would be closer to 1:1 which for RX8 OEM 6-speed gearboxes is 5th gear.

Now, in 2015, the verbiage changed: "the gear producing the highest horsepower readings. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure that the vehicle is compliant with horsepower limits in ALL gears"

I have always done dyno runs on 5th gear.

Has anyone done dyno runs in 6th gear?
