The $200, or $100 for 2nd, doesn't sound like much, but when I've won the money, I've appreciated it, as it helps defray tire and other event costs. When you add in tire contingency, it really starts to reduce your autocross costs. Kumho pays $300 for a win, Hoosier pays TWO tires (pretty good, at $300/ea). So, win a National Tour and walk away with an extra $500 or $200 and two tires...not huge, but definitely not too shabby. Pro payouts can be even better, depending on car, class etc.
Only downside is you get a 1099 on your winnings and it's kind of a pain to line item it on taxes...

I guess it depends on how you look at it...but, even for those with tire deals, the costs of travel, lodging, wear and tear etc. will not be fully paid no matter how many SCCA autocross events you win. There just aren't enough paying events and they are spread all over the country...on the other hand, if you live in the regions which have both a National Tour and Pro event locally, I suppose you could run just those two events and come out ahead of the game...barely.
