lsd parts

can anyone point me to a company that can provide the parts to rebuild a stock locking differential? in my searching all i can come up with is aftermarket assemblies. my local mazda dealer says discontinued, i have tried a few vendors of rx8 parts and they seem to sell complete differentials, not the kit to redo one. any ideas?

Rebuild parts are not available for the factory LSD.
What parts are you looking for in particular? If it's anything other than the cone clutches your best bet would be trying to find one from a junkyard and harvest the parts if your cone clutches are still good.
If your cone clutches friction surface is worn out you're out of luck.
If the tabs are broken, there was someone offering a rebuild for the stock cone clutches, but the only info is from a 2 minute time-lapse on youtube with an email to contact them.
Looks like they are taking your cones and welding or brazing new tabs back on. It might be a good way to fix cone clutches with the tabs torn off as the new tabs appear to have more material at the base of the tab to resist breaking. However I didn't see any reports from anyone who had sent them off to be rebuilt and whether or not the repair was successful.

Alternatively, you could buy a few used differentials and try to find two good clutches from them. But there's no guarantee that they won't fail in short order as well.

If you are just street driving the car I wouldn't bother and just run it as is.
If you are tracking the car your better bet it to get an aftermarket LSD. A functional factory LSD is only marginally better than an open differential. The time, effort, and expense to repair it is probably not worth it.

I swapped out my S1 rear end (4.44) for the S2 rear end.
Less than 20k on S1 unit.
Just saying that low mileage units are out there.
Worth hunting around.

the car is for 24 hours of lemons, budget racing so i wanted to stick with stock parts. there are a few aftermarket diffs available, is there a particular one that you would recommend for road racing?

Those damned s2 4.77 or Mazda's 4.77 are getting hard to find. There are some s1 diffs on ebay but it's a gamble.
edit: Osgiken superlock has very good reviews. But pricey. I'm looking at kaaz super q wpc treated. They claim no chatter no 8s to smooth it. Around 400 bucks cheaper. Good reviews on 350/370z forums

Can you find a junkyard rx8 diff to replace it entirely? Seems like that would be easiest if you want to stay in lemons spec. And they're not bad diffs at all.

Hi guys,
does that rings inside LSD diff some part number or is there any aftermarket parts which I could use for replacement?
After disasemble it, I found out, that both of them are damaged :-(
I have Series 2 - R3 (2009) but I think it's not important

nope and that's the common failure mode, replacement time

an OS Giken is recommended if permitted/affordable, or just throw in another used one

There's also a few versions from Kaaz and Cusco. too bad quaife and wavetrac don't make them for our platform. OSGiken reviews are available, not sure on Kaaz / Cusco, or if there are any others out there.

I originally had and would not recommend a KAAZ unless you don’t mind really loud clunking drivetrain sounds and people looking to see what’s that noise or wondering what’s wrong with your car if it’s used on the street.

shucks... well yeah it's a daily and i appreciate good street manners. i guess even if the Kaaz was effective, i would be turned off by those street manners. although now they have a $100 option that is supposed to improve street manners...

FD centre - if you can find one that's not damaged - would be an option for that style.

Drexler does an Rx8 plate diff too. A mate has one in a non street car ( and not an 8) and is impressed with the longevity, at least compared to some used in the past.
