including free shipping from Hoosier's e-store. can anyone comment on comparisons between this tire and the Kumno V710, w/ respect to absolute grip, durability, any other considerations?

Grip level is probably pretty close, for the 20 or so runs until the cords are showing.

Yep. They are slower than the V710, and they cord rather quickly. They would not be worth the price, IMO, though you might consider the new A6 from Hoosier versus the V710. Early reports suggest that the A6 is fast. How durable it will be will take some time to discover. Anyone done some testing with the A6's yet?

Do S05s cord that quickly on the RX8? I know that the S04s didn't. The Hoosier cording is generally a problem on camber challenged cars, which the RX-8 really isn't. OTOH, when the Hoosier pass the end of their useful life, the transition is pretty abrupt in comparison. Where the 710s kind of slowly start going away after 30 runs or so, they're still good...just not as good, the S04s were good until about 20th run and then they were just bad next time out and only got worse.

Hoosier makes a great tire for people who can understand the wear characteristics and setup changes required to run them.

The S05 has proven to be a good tire for some Marques and have achieved good wear and decent overall grip in non camber challenged cars. I'm inclined to believe that the 8 is one of them. I would make sure to run higher tire pressures, rotate often, and flip the tire on the rim later on if possible. These tire can win regionally as well as nationally.

Hoosiers' new A6 puts down power better than any previous generation tire since the old Bias Ply Autocrosser. This tire IMHO, will win Nationally as a one or two event wonder and or simply be The tire for other Marques because of better tire gearing and available tire sizing options compared to Avon,Hankook,Kumho,Michelin and Yokohama.

For the short term close out pricing the S05 would be a good deal. For the overall best option currently in IMHO, the Kumho V710 is the fastest and most durable tire on the market. It will be more costly in the short term but much more durable and a longer competition life in the long term. YMMV
