Nice job, Carter. 5th on the PAX and straight time's SS in the same heat. I wonder why SS wasn't quicker, Bart Connors is a good driver

Also, good job by Asher, putting '8s 1-2 in the finishing order

Had three drivers so tire warmer Dad and Fred ran in SM. BSP was in same heat so SM was the only alternative. We are on 285's but are going to compare to 245's soon.
Huntsville is an excellent site. The course was not easy for RX8's.On Saturday there were two tight corner exits that required going down to first gear. The Sunday course was better with only one first gear downshift.Think Asher also used first but not sure.

Car weighed 2822 with a little less than 1/4 tank fuel on scales at Huntsville.

On Sunday, where did you use first? The decreasing radius mid way through the course or the last left before the chicane?

Congrats to the 8's it looks like they racked up!! I was the lone FD there. I didn't have a good weekend but won my class thanks mostly to their being only 2 of us in it. I had a really decent final run on Sun. but coned it. Even though I was mad it made me feel better just because I actually had a run where I felt I actually drove the car like normal. Oh well I felt pretty good especially with it being my first national event and actually my first anywhere but B'ham where I'm use to gettting at least 5 runs in.

Congrats to Carter and Asher!

Sorry I couldn't give you guys some better competition. That was one of the most technical courses I've ever driven and my current proficiency level just wasn't up to it. I think it would be easier to count the gates I wasn't late at over the weekend

P.S. The new 350 is fast! That was about a second faster than I've ever seen Mike go before in his old one. Everyone start writing your letters now!

How many National type courses do you think would require a downshift to 1st? I've yet to run an event in the RX8 that I've even been tempted to try it...I can't imagine its much fun.

Actually, some of us used first at Nationals least year on the West course for a turn around a pin cone.

The car seems to take the downshift well. I've personally had more problems with the shift back to 2nd, but that is probably driver related.

saturday, back into first at first hard left after chicane, at decreasing radius, tried it both ways. On Sunday, stayed in 2nd, tried (unsuccessfully) to avoid cones. Picked up on raw times though. I'll come back with shocks, swaybar, wheels and try to at least trophy. gotta be worth a couple of seconds total.

06 Packwood Tour

Team,
I think you must have meant the 06 Packwood Pro because I went to 1st twice in succesive corners. The Tour was completely different and way more open(remember the showcase turns), I was at the top of 2nd twice on the Tour course

Great event Dennis, thanks again I had alot of fun!

The only time I tried first was on the last run Sunday in the chicane after the left hand sweeper leading into the slalom finish. Carter and I both tried it and I think the concensus was that it was a wash.

Saturday was all 2nd for me. Maybe I should have tried 1st but at the time, I didn't feel like you could get much out of it because of the right hand sweeper that I had grip issues even when using 2nd.

Thanks again Dennis, I can imagine that it would be hard putting in all that work and then trying to focus on driving. We appreciate your efforts to make this such a fun event!

BTW, if you see some honda running around town with Little Rock Mazda stickers and Razorbacks.....those are mine. Damn thieves.

OK,
Late to thread but just have to say that the Region did a nice job and all the work and effort was appreciated!

With that said, I can not agree with any statements on the course design. I think people may be confusing technical with busy imputs per second. This is a much ill concieved issue regarding course design.
I'm not saying that it was not fun, it was completely to much of the same type of manuevers and only allowed one line for the course. If you were in a high HP/TQ more so on Sunday these cars really struggled with just the first section of the course before the elongated box.
A better way to put it would be that the smaller cars with lower hp had a distinct advantage as once you got up to speed except for one section you could maintain that speed and fit through the busy sections at speed better than the wider cars with longer wheelbases. I would guarantee that the STS2 cars were the fastest trap speed along with Jason Collett, Steve H, Carter,Asher,Johns and Carpenter simply because they were floored with a brush of the brakes to make the kink.

IMHO, a true reflection of good course design is the ability to choose a variety of lines and setup through particular types of manuevers. The course was more indicative of a runway type transitional course due to the fact we ran along the truncated part of the lot adjacent to the stadium. If we would have spent more time in either ends of the lot and moved the timing trailer and grid further to the parkside of the lot there would have been much more course with a better variety of elements.
This is not a critique of the region it is a personal assesment of utilizing more of the available lot. Putting on these types of events are very time consuming and most often ends up taking alot of time for the few dedicated core people than the many. I for one saw the Red RX8 utilized for everything possible to maintain the needs for the show to go on. My hats off to that person and all there efforts!

I'm sure others may chime in but untill you drive a variety of cars it is very difficult task to please all members and all types of cars at speed. But when you look at the combinatination of low grip(Asphalt),one line and tight cone placement in the slow speed back section manuvers, momentum cars like the Miata's,Mini's I think you get the point, will excel because they rarely have to come down once they reach peak speed and the do not need all the traction available to utilize their TQ/HP. IMHO, only and certainly does not concern personal performance everyone drove the same course within their respective classes.

unfortunatrely that kind of thing is all too common, been fighting it locally, we had great courses last weekend for the first time all year, still way too many cones but a definite improvement over the previous events
