How do you get a good launch in this car?

I did do a search but I got more threads about Half-Life 2 and World of Warcraft than I did about driving.

I know this car isn't a dragster, but I do enjoy going to the strip in my z28 and I thought I'd take the Mazda for a few runs. I've had the car for a few weeks now, and I find it alot harder to get a good launch with this car than the Camaro. (which is kind of ironic because my z has about 160 more hp and more than double the torque). Anyway, I ussually find myself gripping well but then stuck in the low rpms for a second before it finally rev's up in 1st gear or I'm spinning like crazy. I admit I haven't tried too many times because I haven't had the opportunity but I was wondering what kind of techniques everyone else uses.

I haven't done a lot of experimenting... but if you have any back issues of R&T or C&D or some other auto mag, they usually explain what techniques they were using to get the best acceleration runs. I vaguely remember clutch drops from 6000 ine one mag and 8000 in another. What I don't know is, was dsc being used at all (on, off, or really off). One thing is for sure, for a good 1/4 time your gonna have to dump it from the stratosphere.

Of course, the 8 wasn't meant for the drag strip

But when I dump at like 5000 I'm getting too much spin! That's why i'm confused. Should I be buring my clutch a little maybe?

Even with DSC on?
Our launch control on our racing cars (with slick tyres) works at 7500rpm.

I find that I have the best launches feathering the clutch out at 5500 RPM. That way I stay at peak torque for the launch.

Make sure you disable the Stability Control System. With the DSC on Your car will try to react to the tire spin leaving you stuck in the low rpms, then gain grip, then going.

I get wheel/axle hop immediately off a strong launch. I even get wheel hop on a snowy road under a tad of strong acceleration. Drives me nuts. Does this happen to you guys as well?

There are PLENTY of threads about launching and driving this car.. only 3 or 4 about WoW. If you can't properly do a search, don't go insulting us.

Thanks.

I don't go to any strips but I have experimented a few times with launching. I rev to about 6.5k, and feather the clutch. You get TONS of wheels spin, but when it finally catches you are in the optimal range for power. I wouldn't advice doing it often, if you value the life of your clutch/transmission. I think there is a sticky with Polak saying a similar technique.

I've had to play with the launching when I raced my Rx8 last year. Once I dialed in my launch, I was able to land 1.9 60 ft marks.

all the mags get the fastest tiem doing a 5900 rpm clutch drop (they don't recomend doing this at home b/c it will/might damage your transmission/driveline)....personally i got my best time sliping the clutch at 3000rpm..but that was on a horrible track in ga...that was a pain in th ebut to hook up the tires

in rx8 special of R&T, they say the best launches are at 7500 rpm, its worth the wheel spin b/c it puts u right in the power band

the camaro will of course be easier, besides that it has awful engineering, its gets torque really low

i slip the clutch @ 5500 and as soon as it starts to grab, i floor it. u spin all the way into 2nd but you are moving forward. this seems to minimize drive train shock at the cost of clutch life.
