Just picked up a GoPro Hero and wonder if anyone has recommended mount locations/resolutions.

standard HD as I recall, I'll have to double check that

for a single cam I prefer the roof for the best view of driving the course

 

Inside right rear window - gives basically a passengers perspective of the run including hands on the steering wheel with a "standard" (as oposed to wide view) hero. If you don't use a harness, you can start/stop pretty easily from inside the car. Doesn't work if you have a passenger though.

 

I place it near the rear view mirror. I don't know if it would be a problem with an autocross course though.

Feel free to make fun of what happened after that pic lol.
If you're unlucky and have a sunroof then that's ok too.
Otherwise where Team said or under the front bumper grille.
Just have fun experimenting!

 

If you just want cool looking footage low on the front bumper always looks fastest!

Has anyone tried on the ouside of the drivers side rear window? Seems like I've seen it done where you can pick up some(?) driver inputs and still see the course, albeit only from the drivers side.

Here's a picture of the dome light mount. The GoPro has an option to invert the image in it's setup menu. I really like the video coverage from this location but the audio is picking up a noise that I haven't isolated yet:

 

Not a Go Pro but I endorse that angle.

 

Sparks, that's some good stuff! Why so muffled inside the car?

 

I post processed the audio to try to get rid of the clicking noise after the fact. That location definitely needs more work.

Also, what tool do people use to edit, put titles/credits etc?

 

I use a Qstarz BT-1000ex GPS data logger in the car:

And combine with the video using Dashware:

Dashware is really convenient to use. Takes less than 5 min to produce a finished video.

The data logger also comes with data analysis tools (QStarz Racing particularly) that help compare runs back to back. Using that in combination with video helps me see whats really working vs. things that just feel fast.

If so, some tape inside the mount itself will clear that up. The whole mount is wiggling a little bit in there, tape on the base, I used just one layer of regular blue racers tape, will tighten the tolerance and eliminate that sound.

Don't have any videos uploaded to youtube to post with the tape in the mount, but it does get rid of the clicking.

Personally I like the nose mount for tracking, better sense of speed, and I know the camera is right in the middle, can tell basic car placement on the track from there.

I use Trackmaster, its a Droid phone app, its not perfect for serious racing, but I found it to be less than .1s off. That is based on using it on a buddy's race bike equipped with a transponder. Trackmaster will output an excel file that RaceChrono2AVI (free program) will parse and let you put whatever data into a recording area and make a telemetry video, then its just syncing it with your GoPro video in a video editing program.

10 bucks for the app is a ton cheaper than "real" data acquisition, and is all I need. You can make it more accurate by adding a 5 or 10 hz bluetooth module to interface with the app as opposed to the standard 1 hz phone gps, but it does interpolate pretty well as is.

I am using Harry's Lap timer app for data with a jailbroken ipod touch and an external 10 Hz bluetooth GPS unit from our useless MaxQdata setup. When it works, you can overlay runs on the ipod to compare runs. The inconsistency is from the jailbroken GPS software, hopefully this was corrected in the latest update.

For video editing I use RaceRender2, the free version. Just email the exported data from the ipod to your computer, import the data and video files into RaceRender. Trim here and there, line up the data and create. I don't think the free version allows you to add titles.

For the cost this is a decent way to go. If I can't get the current GPS module to work consistently I will be moving to a NMEA enabled device.

 

I got one of these for Christmas and am just now thinking about where to mount it. Has anyone tried the map light? I can't really tell if it would be in the way or not. It seems like it would be no worse than the rear view mirror. In 960p mode, it captures the top half of the steering wheel.



I love the unicorn (top of the windshield) mount, but I really want to be able to see my hands. The driver's side rear door window is pretty good, but there is still the issue of wind noise. And for both, you have to get out of the car to start and stop it.

On the driver side rear small window gives a great look at your inputs and the road ahead of you. I find it hard to pick out mistakes when you can't see what you did.

Mounted mine to the map light. I keep hitting my helmet on it while entering and exiting the vehicle, but it's not in the way while driving. I like the view of the course / steering wheel.

Did you use the 3m tape mount, any extenders added on to it? I use the suction cup to the sunroof, but I feel it gets too much of the inside and not enough of the outside.

 

I used the shortest adhesive mount with no extensions. Basically just like the picture I posted above.
