I've seen Work first, run fourth. The worst of all worlds, get up early, pack and leave late.

D Stock has to run first, work fourth. At least you can get your car packed up during heats 2-3

Atlanta 05, BS worked 1st and ran 2nd (4 heats total). I remember being kind of anxious about it beforehand, but it worked out well. It was kind of nice to work, run, pack and be on the road before noon on Sunday.

But the furthest station to grid at Gwinnett was about as far as the closest station to grid at last year's Devens Tour. Still, I'd take this over running in the last heat at the 2005 Peru Tour again.

Check out www.teamwtf.org when John V and clyde post the videos up, so you can watch the proper line. This is just one learning experience, and you already came out ahead by actually having the ball to do it. As far as getting ridiculed here, it's just tough love.

Just remember that autoxing skill is not something you are born with. It's an acquired skill, much like golf. You have done all the preparations on the car already, so work on the most critical part -- the driver.

Uh...I wouldn't be too sure about that, but you can judge for yourself in a few days when I get the videos done. John had some smoking times both days, but cones kept him out of 1st in AS. Some major mental breakdowns on my part hurt on Saturday and screwed me out of any chance of respectible times on Sunday, but what are you gonna do? We'll be back in two weeks to take on the STis at the DC Pro...and then go run against Cashmore in Milwaukee a couple weeks after that.

Based on my conversation with Polak Sunday morning, I got the impression that he got the message. Well, part of it anyway.

And as far as learning experiences go, I'll just say that we learned a lot this weekend.

That's a good point. Over the last two and a half years that I've been autocrossing, I've met a number of National Champs that really weren't all that fast in their first few years of autocross. Seat time, video, experimenting and learning from others brought them to the point of being able to compete, and win, at a National level. I've also seen others who just get in the car and are fast from day one, but it still seems to take experience and seat time for those drivers to really come into their own. Either way, I think the more any of us see the elements that make up most all autocross courses and develop so much "muscle memory" that we intuitively know the best/fastest approach to any element, the easier it will become to perform at the higher levels with consistency.

Well, what I learned this past weekend:

1) National events are all about consistency, being able to run within tenths of seconds of your fastest run on your first run; not dropping 2-3 seconds over the course of 3 runs.
2) Rain is not fun, first time in the wet and i had no idea what to run as far as set up, or how to drive it, i think next time I'll not only take down rebound but also compression down to full soft, finished 8th out of 9 on Saturday, had no chance at the evos/stis in the wet, but should have been up around the times that those E36s were running.
3) Saturday put me out of contention for any hope of a "decent" finish, Sunday i ran the 6th fastest time but was still 1.5 seconds off the leaders and it took me till my 3rd run to get down even "that" close... consistency consistency consistency...

Overall a pretty good experience, least I looked the part :-p

Best Run of the weekend, would appreciate pointers on where i screwed up beside being slow through the first 3-cone slalom, going wide after the offset slalom and not looking ahead and sucking in on the turn around on the backside of the course:

Edit: also i couldn't get the car to launch right all weekend, didn't care to go above 6.5k but got a decent bit of wheel hop on all the launches is it worth taking compression or rebound down to counteract this?

Appreciate the compliment but I think F Stock was the class you wanted to watch if learning the right way to drive was the goal. They took most everyone to school.

At the end of Saturday, I would have said that the FS results were a bit misleading because Lynne's 3rd run was a rerun (due to an inattentive worker at my station ) that had the advantage of a much drier course. She backed it up on Sunday, though, and kicked ***.

The weather is the last thing you should be stressing about right now. "Scattered thundershowers" with a 30% chance of precip three days before the event around here means nothing. Weather forecasters are wrong far more than they are right in this area.

Only way to know what the weather is gonna be like is to show up and wait for it to happen. :p

Anyway, it's your first Pro, right? So just soak it in and enjoy it, try not to worry about it, and I guarantee you'll drive better. :D
