Holy crap autocross is awesome.

Went with the Tarheel Sports Car Club to a dilapidated little airstrip down in Laurinberg so we had all sorts of dust and dead plants and other wonderful Mario Kart obstacles to navigate. It was a fast course (to the best of my knowledge) and was mostly set up to give you just enough rope to hang yourself.

The novice bracket was massive and had everything from a POS Cavalier to a seriously street-modified Jetta TDI to a bunch of S2000s. I took sixth out of 22 and I suspect I was the fastest first-timer - but not getting cocky because I still have a long ways to go. My main project is going to be getting ahead of the car, i.e. looking ahead.

True to form, fastest times in the event overall went to a bunch of 100HP Miatas whose drivers were absolutely insane. My instructor offered to let me ride shotgun and proceeded to completely thrash a Corvette Z06 with me in the car. Cripes. Fastest of the day went to a Mini Cooper S - I thought the little turbo on that thing was going to explode about five times over.

Anyway. Autocross is now officially the Best Thing Ever.

I did my first autox a couple weeks ago, too! Autox is indeed totally awesome. I had a couple instructors compliment the seats in my R3, but none of them said anythign about the power. It might be because the instructor that helped me out the most number of times had a supercharger in his miata. I also heard my fair share of "look ahead, keep looking ahead, BRAKE!! look ahead" and so on...
