Drift success with your 8
I searched quickly, but didnt find much of what i was looking for. Im curious who here drifts there 8, and has had much success with it. Im sure i will here they are under powered, and cant smoke the tires off at 50, but i dont care. I used to drift a stock engined s13. Coilovers, exhaust, welded diff. Thing was a blast. Sure, it was underpowered as well, but that just meant i had to know what i was doing. It was more fun that a stupid powerful car(also drifted 400+hp s13). Took more finesse, but alot of fun.
Now i drift my 8 some. Slap me on the wrists, but yes, on the street. Well, empty warehouse parking lots, and abandoned apple warehouses. Im going to attend the next local drift event, so ill be all legal there. (wondering how the hell ill be able to wear a helmet in my car though).
Anyway, who here drifts, and what are your thoughts on your 8? Videos and pics are welcome. I know i love the way my 8 feels when steering with my right foot, and its just stock. Mods to come this winter.

It is all skill. Kevin from DriverDynamics can drift any car, even a FF (just kidding)

i occasionally drift my 8, autocross tends to be just that bit more fun lol. I totally agree, clutch kick seems to be the simplest way to get it out then with a little finesse it'll maintain angle till ur tires blow. I do find power-over to be the most controlable tho, especially in wet weather. O and yea i used to be part of the FF *cough* "***-dragging" scene in my previous car also lol, 87 prelude Si, damn i loved that car, took anything i could throw at it, o well moved on to bigger and better things.

i drift my 8 once or twice a week and love it, however because of the ballance, its a little less forgiving than a 240 at speed..... and its hard to get grip once she comes out, i have sways and coilovers, so the grip thing i just have to dial out. the rx8 also requires much more movement of the wheel to maintain a drift....in my boys 240 i could make corrections using 1/4 turn of the wheel, my 8- half to 3/4s of a turn....its a little more challenging, but fun....

Do you guys turn off the DSC & traction control when drifting?
I might start having some fun in my 93 525i, got some bilstens, lowered, m5 sways and some other goodies Handles with surgical precision like the 8 but in a much bigger proportion.

Also, it was pretty funny since they welded some metal on the e-brake and migrated it onto the left side.

Power slide is the easiest in the wet.
Of course everything is off. Make sure you don't overspeed since you will most likely get understeer.
Brake fade also good for oversteer... I am doing a track video in my blog now.. I just avoid trail brake oversteer at the worst corner of the track ...

After that it's all in the setup. As they come from Stance, the GR+ coilovers might be great for drifting, because the car oversteers pretty much constantly.

That is what I was thinking, when I went to Formula D in Sonoma a couple of weeks back, the only RX8 didn't even make qualifying, seems like he was having trouble getting it sideways correctly. I gotta dig up the video somewhere.

Well, since posting this, i have messed around quite a bit. Went on a local backgrounds out of town, where i used to drift my s13. It drifts quite nicely. A little more precision is needed compared to my s13, but its really fun. I did an uphill corner entering at 50 and drifted for probably 5seconds. Top of 2nd gear had enough power(scared the crap out of my buddy). I really want to go to an event, but there are no local ones left, and the one next weekend is up in Monroe, WA which is about 3 hrs away, plus tires, plus 50 bucks to enter, plus gas. Too much cash for me right now.

I've been into drifting forever. I have a 91 miata which is a lot easier to drift (and a lot more fun since the smell of burning rubber fills the car) but I've been trying to get the dynamics of the RX8 down.
A lot the time, all you get is a cool fishtail from power overs but every once and awhile, if you're brave, keep the revs around 7500 and you go gangsta wide, the tires will start to light up. And the RX8 hugs the ground so well that I'm not even worried about entry speed or angle... it usually works itself out. DSC off of course

It's certainly something I wouldn't recommend doing outside of a closed course. Please take it to a track where you're unlikely to hurt anybody but yourself.

Look, I'm not saying you didn't do it, but 50mph for 5 seconds is over 360ft. That seems to me like a really long drift.

I agree, in the street you should just do little things to have fun, power slides, and little drifts, not going all out

But, i can tell you i am getting very used to the car. I cant wait to get on a course and let er rip.

Last AutoCross I was at, I had already set a pretty good time, so I was ******* about.
Found out that the RX8 rotates REALLY well if you simply "chuck" the car into the corner and brake at the apex. Only thing was, I didn't put on throttle at sliding point (which would've prolly maintained the drift), because I wanted to set a good time.
Go try braking drifts and tell me how it is. I'm curious.
Oh right, I was running tire pressures at about 38psi.
