Beat a 350Z

Of course the really sweet part of this is he beat me a couple events ago.

Here are the times, the second run I was not looking ahead at all, and it shows, even without the cone it was my worst time.

Class: B-STOCK -----------------------------------------------------------------
1. 564/BS RX-8 > 35.256 <
TIMES: 1) 37.992 2) 40.146( 1) 3) 37.267 4) 36.409
5) 35.256

2. 77/BS 350 Z > 36.638 <
TIMES: 1) 38.113 O/C 2) 39.046 3) 37.553 4) 36.638
5) 36.671

Best time of the day on this course was 31.467 by a Lotus Elise with SSR comps and compounds (I have Kumho MX tires 225/40R18)

FACT: You don't need 287 HP to be fast.

....But it does help.

There is more to a fast car than horsepower. I just wish some people understood that. Every time I tell a friend what the 1/4 mile time for my car is, they call it slow. Last time we went for some canyon drive, I raped them all. That was the last time anyone called it slow.

Guess it depends where you want to be fast doesn't it. Want to be fast around a dinky little autocross course then, no, you don't need a lot of horsepower.

Congrats on the races man, lots of fun I imagine.

From what I know, Fast is Fast no matter how you do it. So if your fast between the cones then your considered fast. I didn't know the definition of fast was only in a straight line, but some people seem to think so?

Autox requires a high level of driver skill holding the car at the edge of its performance envelope in handling, acceleration, and braking. Driving in a straight line requires your car have a lot of power, and you not screw up shifting.

If anything, driving fast has absolutely nothing to do with mashing pedals, and everything to do with turning the wheel.

There's an old quote somewhere...

Drag racing is for fast cars
Autocrossing is for fast drivers.

I wouldnt talk J about 350z's. Even though theyre less practical, theyre faster, and handling is just as good as 8's, but just less forgiving if you make a mistake. Theyre really fun cars, since i used to have one. Now that i own an rx-8 i see the differences are basically negligable.

I beat two 350 zs at the 1/8th mile last friday by more than a second. They're not as fast as everyone makes them to be. Granted I am turbo'd but they werent stock either. One had all sorts of stuff done to it, intake, exhaust, pullies, gears. It was a rivalry for sure.

Look I am getting a Rx-8 I wanted a 350z but due to space requirements I need something that can hold a little more gear. Everyone can talk up and down about how well their car handles but that comes 2nd to power. I always here if I got them in the twisties man what I could do, the fact is how many highways have curves all over the place? Bring your Rx-8 over here to Germany get on the autobahn get dusted and say well if there were curves all over the place I would have hung in there.

The 8 is a beautiful car IMO but I am sure the rest of you wouldn't mind an extra 50 hp and 50 tq to boot. I hope, and I know that the aftermarket will be just as good in a few short years as it is with the 7. My goal is 8 daily driver that handles well and the 7 for those "thrilling" moments.

They had a mobile mustang dyno at mosport this weekend for the Honda/Michelin racers. A 350Z jumped on and dynoed 227 hp (I think, in the 20's anyway) and 197 lb-ft at the wheels. The car I raced at the beginning of the season dynoed 414 hp and I can't remember the torque, 350+ I think. I bet I could take the Z :p

fastest 1/8th mile I could get was a 8.7, we dont have a 1/4 mile track anywhere close to here. If we take a road trip then I'll find a 1/4.

What track were you on? How big in miles? How many turns?

AutoX. Tight twisty course in a small parking lot at the Boeing Plant in Ridley Park, PA 9~5 miles south of the Philadelphia Airport).

One of these days I'll start going to the track.

For you maybe. For me automotive nirvana is breaking into a turn, doing a perfect heel-toe downshift, (hear those beutiful revs), hitting the apex just right, powering out of the run with just a hint of 4 wheel drift, there is nothing better than that.

I've gone 200mph in a train, and 20mph around a corner in an RX8 at ~1g. 20mph is "faster."

--R.

PS. How is an RX8 like a Formula 1 car? They both have less peak torque than a 350z.

Where'd you pick that up? LOL

BTW, I was at BeaveRun this past weekend with Porsche Club and there were very few cars out there that were faster than me. Of those that were, many had roughly double my horsepower :D

Well, I think that I could factually disagree with you (read: you're wrong).
By "faster", I guess you must mean in a straight line. That part is true, so the 350Z is a better drag racer than an RX-8. However, many people value handling, braking, and overall feedback just as much, if not more than, acceleration.

As far as the 350Z handling just as good as the RX-8, that is incorrect. There is no question that the RX-8 handles considerably better. Did you notice that the RX-8s dominated the SCCA Solo-II Championship? There was a 350Z in 9th, I think.

The 350Z would be a good car if it went on a diet. With 2 less doors, 2 less seats, and w/out the space required to accomodate them, the 350Z is STILL 300+ lbs heavier than the RX-8! It NEEDS all that torque and hp to get it moving. I've driven 350Z's, so I'm not speaking out of my a$$. If it were 300lbs lighter, it would likely brake and handle almost as well as the RX-8, and THEN the extra hp would make it faster overall!
